The whole Swiss population voted on the minaret issue and a majority voted for a ban. The Swiss are not racist (1 in 7 Swiss residents are foreigners), nor do they want to restrict religious freedom (there are over 150 mosques). However, Switzerland is a very beautiful country and the Swiss did not want that changed with 40 feet towers dotted around their chocolate box landscape.

40 foot towers - minarets or not - wouldn't pass regulations, unless they were offices or flats within cities that served the general community. Minarets don't fall into that category and there is no requirement in Islam to have them. They belong in countries where their presence is compatible with Islamic culture.
