Banana death?

In school you always heard daft stories about people getting killed by dropped sandwiches etc :D

The variant of that story I heard was coins, and the building in question being the Empire State building. The tale goes that the tower is of sufficient height that a coin dropped from the top would have enough velocity to penetrate a human skull. Mythbusters proved quite conclusively that patently wasn't true however, worst you'd have is a headache.

I saw a video of a tallow candle being shot through a 4 inch plan of wood. The plank did not come out of the exchange well.

Moral of the story: it doesn't matter how soft it is, if you give it enough speed, you could kill someone with it.

Yes but you have to give it enough velocity. I seriously doubt a banana would be able to withstand the force required to get it to a velocity sufficient enough to kill someone.

Sure, in a vacuum with constant acceleration then I agree it's possible to get the banana to a high speed, but getting a vacuum big enough and setting the experiment up sufficiently to perform it would be far from practical!

vacuum and gentle acceleration \o/

Yeah, good luck with that! :D

So potentially the answer to the thread is yes, a banana can kill you, but only when you're the wrong side of the outer atmosphere?

I will sleep better at night now. :p

Indeed! :D

I can't believe how silly yet involved this thread is and how seriously it is being addressed! :D

I bet you could reach some high speeds with an air cannon and salvo. Weather you could reach speeds high enough to cause damage is anyones guess.

edit - salvo is not the word I'm looking for, what's the thing called where you wrap a projectile usually in foam to get it to fir a barrel. Which then separates and falls of once out of the barrel.

What needs to be taken into account:

If the car is in fact travelling at 150mph, the person responsible for hurling the banana is quike likely to miss!

this thread is hilarious :D

I would say an unripe bannana could do quite some damage if it hit the right place and at the right velocity.

Yes but once it hits the air will the banana withstand the air resistance (if it survived the blast in the first place ;))!!! :p

I expect it would survive the blast as it's cushioned by the casing, air resistance all depends what speed you would need to reach to cause harm.

Who's got a mahoosive potato cannon.. *looks at johnny.

If you threw one out the ISS it would easily destroy a satellite if it hit it

Might possibly do severe damage to the space shuttle too especially if it was orbiting in the opposite direction..

A Sabot is what your after i think

you saying he's got a fine ass :D

Lol! What a Freudian slip! :D

good point. However wouldn't t effectively be in a vacuum and frozen solid? So the variables and definition of the project are changing dramatically! :p
