NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 GPU Box/specs

You've totally missed the point in this thread.

It's to show that they're getting close to release if boxes are being finalised.

Considering it was "supposed" to launch months and months ago theres no reason the boxes couldn't have been designed then, or a year ago.

The only real "specs" on there, are the outputs, but thats not even indicative of what the card supports(as you assume it does indeed support Displayport), but what the company wants as connections. Other specs, the PSU rating could just be the outside maximum that Nvidia will ever release, the 1.5gb has been known for years, as its a 384mbit bus, it was ALWAYS going to be 1.5gb and quite possibly 768mb on the 470gtx, though more likely same on the 470gtx and dropping to 768mb from maybe the 460gtx and below.

Theres nothing in the box, nothings finalised, and the box might never see the light of day with retail products.

just one thing, why are they designing the box now when they could have done that when fermi was on the drawing board...that is odd tbh

I was actually refering to 4850 was launched at around £130, 4870 around £180, 260 around £220, 280 around £300 back then.

Hmmm. My point is still valid even with todays exchange rate.

5850 £210 GTX285 £268

5870 £300 GTX295 £371

In fact the savings are now bigger than when the 4 series was launched.

If we still had $2 to the pound it would be as follows:

5850 £175 GTX285 £220

5870 £246 GTX295 £305

The 5770 would be under £100.

Okay, this time round ATI doesn't have much competition and if they had I am sure the 5 series would be cheaper still. Perhaps the 5850 if it was still $2:£1 would be £130.

However, you can't argue that ATI have launched faster cards than Nvidia for less money.

Lets hope it doesn't squeal under load like every other card since the 8800 series.

I won't be buying another card untill it's sorted.

Do you refer to nvidia cards when you say this as my 5870 is far quieter then my old 8800gt under load before it lol

On topic though, the specs do sound interesting but the power requirements are abit OT for my system lol

The bigger news is supposedly that a couple 470gtx's were yanked out of boxes for a quick pick, and the early news is they are 320bit, 1.28gb mem(due to lower memory bus) 2x 6pin power, which could really limit any overclocking, which was likely to be bad anyway considering they are releasing with clocks massively lower than they wanted.

That might make the 470gtx a bit of a bigger drop in performance over the 480gtx than expected, unlikely to be able to overclock far, which considering we're set to get a bunch of new overclocking versions like MSI's lightning 5870, the Asus "stupid edition for rich people" 5970, and the fact they both overclocked very well to start with.

50% wider memory bus + 50% more GDDR5 + 50% larger die size when compared to the 58xx series will equal >50% more expensive. I reckon pricing will be £320 & £460 for mini and maxi Fermi. The ~£320 part may just about equal/beat a 5870 - it might even be competitive. I cannot see NVidia offering anything that can compare to the 5850 for price/performance, and this could be why ATI have revised pricing of 5850 cards upwards.

Sorry I was being facetious. Of course, as always the 600w minimum refers to the system, all this talk of 42A epic fail. It's no different to any other card. In fact at worst 2A from a 280 OC, so 260W/21A ish, like I said half that.

Cannot wait to see some benches, sometime soon be nice to get both nvidia and ati selling dx11 cards, it gets boring just one company selling new cards.

the Asus "stupid edition for rich people" 5970

That made my day.

On topic, I think it will be one big FAIL from nvidia the same way the 280gtx was. Anyone remember that fake pic of 280gx2 with free 2000w psu? hahaha : )
Someone should make one for fermi.

Knowing nvidia, the 480gtx will be around 600quid at release and probably due to it being no faster than 5970 they will drop the price from 600 to 300-350 2weeks later.

Just look at the price tag on the 295 when what hit the shelves.
It's gonna be no different to that except more
I am expecting a tag of 650 -700 for the top card, this will then even out and drop to 500-550 when the price should happen to drop.
Nvidia are not going to release a card that is cheaper than an ati card that they're trying to pwn

I believe he is referring to a high pitched noise coming from the cards and not from the fan. I hear it quite audibly on my GTX295 when the frame rate goes into silly numbers during intro/loading screens in games such as GTA4 and Crysis. Don't remember hearing it on my 8800GT or 7800GT :D

I'd be tempted to use a 12v car battery to test this card... Will need pretty thick cable for 42a however...

As has been said though, nvidia word thier PSU specs to consider the full draw of the kind of system they feel it will be used in, they do this for all thier cards, all they are saying is that for the system you should use a minimum 42a PSU.

42amps just for the card it would need a dedicated PSU, lol!

They are also always conservative when talking about power requirements, to 'err on the side of safety' i guess - just look at some of the official SLI PSU requirement figures.

The power figures quoted, to me look perfectly acceptable, and pretty much what I would expect... I cant see what all the fuss is about

edit: The card itself will likely require about 18-20amps

So, since the GTX275 draws about 219W, and requires 40A on the 12v rail, presumably we can deduct that the 480 should draw approximately 24W more than that (about 243W)?

Yeh, ive not done the maths but that would be logical-

Watts = Amps x Volts
Watts / Amps = Volts
Watts / Volts = Amps

42a x 12v would be an estimated max full system load of 504 watts

I get the feeling 42A might be overstating the requirements by A LOT. It's probably to stop people with cheapo £20 "800W" PSUs that would blow up if connected to this card.

If the rating was accurate, I'd hate to see how much power the GTX 495 would draw!!!
