2560x1600 Gaming: AMD® Phenom™ II X4 vs Intel® Core™ I7

Hang on.....I'll just pop a 5970 in my basket...thats 550 quid.....damn I can save 70 buying a Phenon II 965....

Doh If I go for a http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-128-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1577 @ £499 then the i7 will only be 20 quid more....

Man this buying PC hardware is so tricky :p

Gotta love all this 20-50quid diff of yours after you take most expensive mobo for AMD and most crappy one for i7.

How about:
i7 920 - 220
mobo - 150
ram - 120
-------------
TOTAL= 490

VS

555BE - 75
mobo - 60
RAM - 80
------------
TOTAL =205

490 - 205 = 285 , thats 5850f worth of difference ...

Now you gonna come with OMG OMG but thread is about 965 not 555, I could take i5 for lesss toooo.

i5 750 - 160
mobo - 75
RAM - 80
------------
325, still 120 difference and you're loosing the edge that i7 gives you with extra threads.

I still get more GPU power and I still win.

You loose get over it :-).

And lower res isn't going to make the AMD go any slower, it can only get more FPS at lower res, not less.

If it's completely playable at max details with 2560x1600 that only proves my point that you don't need i7 for gaming.

And who gives a damn if you get 230fps instead of 200fps ...
"Oh you should buy best you can afford, so you can e-peen around like me with few fps extra in benchmarks".

And all this future-proof BS.
If you do a search on MM for i7 you'll see at least 10selling each week...
I wonder why half of the uber i7 gaming buyers sell their stuff withing 2-12months.

I guess they just realised that they're getting ripped off...

You're just upset that games are just as playable on my 200quid setup as on your 500+ setup.

No matter how you put it, you can't change the fact that games are GPU limited and will play just fine with any CPU above 3.2-3.4ghz (even 3core for 40quid will do) as long as you slap 5770x2, 4890x2, 5850, 5870 or similar in there depending on the res you play on.

Encoding / servers etc - i7 yes please.
Gaming - AMD.
E-Peen Max - dual CPUs under phase or 975extreme with LN or high end water.

I'd rather spend the extra 50-100-200-300quid difference on watercooling/ssd/gpu.

Fine, if you want to throw out 2-3grand then can just as well take it all, but only if you can afford all of it.

Nice results. To the people saying if you're shelling out for a 5970 then might aswell go i7, surely you'd rather not just throw money around for no reason. I know even if i had the money for that setup i'd think carefully about spending an extra couple of hundred quid for ~5 fps extra

I have posted countless times on the price of i7 compared to Phenom II...

Fact is if you have 550 quid to spend on a 5890 to get a few extra FPS over a 5850 then you really don't care about spending the extra on i7.:p

Might aswell have the power there should you choose to do other things with your PC...Also to have a longer lasting PC.

Your arguement for "gaming go AMD " is flawed as for bang for buck gaming i3 is the way to go then i5 750...The benchies support this.

But AMD setup with 5850 will still do better than i5 with 5770, and they're same price : ).

HELLO, WAKE UP.

Games will be just playable on x3 435 as on your i7, just because in benchs i7 gets 120fps somewhere over 100fps of half price amd setup that doesn't mean anything.

i7 is the worst value for performance choice for games unless they play 3x24 eyefinity setup but then they will have craploads of money to spend anywyas and would probably get 5970 or two as well.

Stop ignoring all the facts and saying next, my setup is just playable as the i5 and is still at least 120quid cheaper which could get me SSD, watercooling, uber case, nice monitor or just better or 2nd gpu for the same cash.

i3 became better now that it dropped in price but it's still few quid extra and I don't see it getting any better gaming results than the 555 or heck, even 435. And these are all budget chips where every 30quid difference counts.

At the end of the day the benchmarks aint worth nothing because if I give you i3/i5/i7 rig next to 435/555/965 rig, put in a 5870 and play a game, you won't be able to tell the difference.

And again regarding the res, if it does well at that res, it only means that anything lower will get sliced like through like butter.

I bet Uriel has a bigger grin on his face now! . . . I mean he's got a £40 processor that with *luck* he has unlocked and with *skill* he has superbly overclocked to the point where it matches the performance (within 1fps) of the 450% more expensive Intel® Core™ i7 @4.0GHz in Wolfenstein, Crysis Warhead, Far-Cry 2, Battleforge, & Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X! :D

Well done Uriel! . . . I know you have cursed your luck in not being able to reach 4.0GHz X4 with your £40 processor but hopefully now you can sit back with a smile and enjoy your bang-for-buck beasty!

how easy is it to get the phenom to 4ghz? cos the i7 was a piece o cake. just wondering not saying amd struggle or anything i just want to know?

On average a lot more i7s will do 4GHz and above in comparison with Phenom. The C3 steppings seem to be clocking better, even seen a few 4.2GHz stable clocks under water. But still, pretty much even the worst i7 will do 4GHz

4GHz is over-rated! . . . nice to achieve it but the *buzz* wears off after a few weeks/months and your left with a fast processor! :D

Also the C3 P2s will do 3.8ghz on stock cooling while i7 will need 40-50cooler and good case to do 4ghz.

Either way, anything above 3.4ghz makes little to no difference in games.

Not to mention the athlons II, they're so cool that you probably could OC one to around 3.2ghz with passive cooler.

PS. Someone wanna borrow me 4890/4870x2 or 5850 for a weekend to do some benchs with 555? ; )

I'd say I like to get a good deal! ;) . . . I also don't mind ripping my machine apart once a year and build something new, so many nice things in life come with a pricetag and there is a whole universe of nice things outside of PC hardware!

Your like a hungry man sitting there with your socket A AMD® XP3200+ looking at all the tasty tech, you could buy some new bits of hardware for about £300-400 smackers that would blow you away but your of the older mindset and somehow feel you need to blow £800 to meet your expectations? . . . It's certainly not helping you canvassing opinions in this place! :D
