Cool hatchbacks for under £9000

Wouldn't get a MkV R32 for £9k unless it was a total duffer, and the MkIV R32s are just too old now.

Talking of which, I badly want this car:

DSG, Sat Nav, leather, xenons, *swoon*.[/QUOTE]

Why didn't you buy it then? You had the money to do so.

Guys, if he found his GT TDi "dull" for a reason he can't put his finger on, its probably the numbness of the VAG group of cars, rather than anything specific to the GT TDi.

With this in mind, the LCR, the Golf R32, the Golf GTI, will all feel just as crap.

So because a GT TDi is boring, a GTi will be boring also? That's so laughably untrue.

You would spend £18k on that? - You could have a brand new scirocco for that

No, I'd spend £16k-£16.5k on it. And what new Scirocco could you get new for £16k-£16.5k? Nothing worth having. The first wave of Sciroccos are crap apart from exterior looks anyway, they have MkV Golf dashboards.

You had the money to do so.

I still have the money to do so .

Why didn't you buy it then?

Because we couldn't have gotten the fantastic deal on a second hand R32 that we got on the Golf 6. The purchase avenue we took has since been shut down as VW they cottoned onto it. Also from the wife's point of view, she wanted the newer model. From my point of view, I would have liked a GTi / R32, but saw the fact that we could get a year's depreciation-free motoring whilst driving the latest model, and decided to settle on the VI.

Usual thread direction.

From the OP's posts it doesnt seem like he wants or needs a proper hot hatch with the associated costs that go with them.

He'd be better off with a warm hatch instead, which gives him the looks without the faff and possibly nets him a newer car as well.

Couldn't you manage saying what you thought actually was?

Doesn't really matter does it?

Its all a matter of opinion, personally I think the Astra VXR is the coolest looking hot hatch on the market at the moment . But many will disagree.

Yea, you'd end up being stick with that eco-hippy downsized turbo thing in the base model ;)

Presumably, given your obsession with the years 'depreciation free' motoring, you are going to sell it once it reaches a year old? Because surely if you keep it, it'll depreciate. It does seem a bit weird that on the one hand you continually cite how important 'depreciation free' motoring is to you yet on the other you'll sound off about how you've still got enough money to buy an R32 but you... chose not to so you didnt lose a grand or two in depreciation

It's a shame you had to compromise in such a way that you couldnt reach the car you really wanted. I guess now we know this it makes sense why you constantly try to re-assure yourself that you bought the right car.

Maybe you can have an R32 next time, once the novelty of having the latest plate wears off?

Such as?

R32 will probably hold it's value better.

Well, obviously that depends what was paid for it in the first place.

An Astra VXR cooler than a Golf GTi? Well, each to their own I suppose.

A Golf GTi is not a super hot hatch, it's a hot hatch.

OP stated it does not have to be a super hot hatch; this would push me away from the RS (not that you can get those for £9k) and the Megane but not the Golf and the Civic.

It's still a 200bhp car, its still going to be about 5 years old for his budget, etc etc.

Lots of tradeoffs to make to gain performance he isn't really that bothered about obtaining. Tradeoffs I'd make without hesitation, but then, my needs are different to his.

Exactly each to their own, you find it hard to get over. The Golf doesn't do anything for me looks too bland, the VXR comes over as being a bit dangerous in your face.

Nice Sarcasm Fox. Your good at that.

Why is a mk4 too old ? Are you one of these idiots who thinks all cars over 5 years old are unroadworthy and should be scrapped.

You can get some amazing performance bargains if you dont have that attitude.

Let me think, Mk4 R32 + lots of change still cheaper than your Mk5/6/whatever it is.

I know people will shoot be down but you can pick up a '55' VXR now for under £9000. Running costs aren't any worse than a normal 2.0L Astra.

So it delivers the same economy as a normal Astra, has the same insurance premium, takes the same size tyres and costs the same to service?

Seriously, what?

I get the feeling it wasnt his decision and more his wifes' decision.

Entirely based on the fact he has said his wife wont let him get rid of the car.
