Ubisoft's New DRM Cracked In Under 25-Hours

I think once the companies realise that if people want a free game, they are going to get it, one way or another. That just leaves the rest of us who dont want DRM and wont buy a game because of it

Theres an image kicking round atm about watching a pirated copy of a film compared to watching a proper DVD, going through piracy warnings, adverts for other films, menus, more FBI warnings etc. This rings true in the gaming world too.

When will they learn that they can't beat the people that crack them?
It just can't be done!

They just shoot themselves in the foot in the process. Spore for example. Heavily DRM'd, cracked and one of the most downloaded games of all time. Losing a sale in the process.
"DRM? Nah I'll download it thanks, don't want all that guff."

I really wonder what they would be able to achieve if they put their accumulative brain power together though, those are some smart guys at Skid-Row.

Anything that can be engineered can be reverse engineered.

How hard is it really to change the URL of where the saves go to from http://ubisoft to file://c:\documents and settings/etc.

The only effective solution at the minute is CDKey and really good online content, such as CoD4 where by it authenticates your CDKey on connecting to a server. Alternatively it's an online account - but that's only stopping the online side. Games like Silent Hunter, AC2, Settlers, etc. are known for there single player more than the multi-player (maybe this will change for Settlers in the latest release but doubt it). Why not concentrate on making an absolutely awesome single player game, then add some basic DRM (i.e. you can not copy this disk or cdkey) and job done instead of having online activation, etc. which just ruins it. Crackers have a point to prove and while people keep saying this can't be cracked or it's the biggest DRM ever then they will be queuing up to break it.

I think devs are trying to put us off buying the pc version, how many of us also own a console? I know piracy exists on wii and 360 but it's not easy for the average joe. I think they're making the pc experience as **** as possible so you just buy the console version.

marvellous. yet another form of DRM that only actually affects paying customers.

It's complete tunnel vision by the dev's. They 'believe' (based on nothing) that piracy is more on the PC than any other format neglecting the fact that there are much more PC users than XBox users and people downloading something constitutes that they must be a pirate and not a legitimate user with a broken disk, etc.

I wouldn't buy the console versions as my PC is much more powerful and I can do multiple things at once on it - i.e. browse and play a game or listen to music, etc. without needing multiple devices.

The devs are just shooting themselves in the foot really because when they come out with rubbish like this then people really do wonder why they are being opressed for buying a game.

i'd hate to be the guy who suggested it in the first place.
can't really feel sorry for them as they knew it would really be ******* over their customers yet still went ahead with it.

why not just add decent online play wih cd keys ? it usually works quite well, so if someone wants the funnest part of the game they have to pay.

It's not like you had a vision. It was a non issue from the start and bound to happen before they even had the idea.

Here's my vision now. They come up with a new DRM system and it'll be cracked again.

'Crackers' seem to be like parasites. They are slowly killing the games market. Companies will just give up making PC games.

All those people who download cracked games are also as bad, dont they know or care they are killing the market? Probably to stupid or selfish to even think about it.

I'm really glad it was cracked/hacked after all the praise and hype Ubisoft gave it, as I hated the sound of it when they first announced it. Hopefully this will just show Ubisoft, and other developers, that stupid DRMs are just not the way to go.

No one is killing anything and despite the "rampant" piracy that apparently affects PC sales, no digital distribution company publishes their sales figures.

For all we know games like COD5 which sold millions of copies in store for the xbox and ps3 could have been dwarfed by the sale of the PC version on steam etc.

Piracy is an issue, but those people who download games have little or no intention of ever paying for it so its not really even a lost sale. They do it because they can, the day they are no longer able to pirate games will be the day that actually start to pay for them or just stop playing games.

Yes they are killing the market but game companies are not exactly helping themselves. I would love a world where games can't be cracked and companies give more in return such as longer games, dedicated servers and most importantly, a limited trial period. PC demos are almost a thing of the past and forking out for something that may not run on your PC is not fair.

Ok, which publisher do you work for and why are you people so deluded?

Have to admit I am really happy this got cracked so quickly, that kind of DRM produced by Ubisoft was a step backwards for PC gaming.

Hope they have learned a very harsh lesson here, to stop punishing legitimate customers and treating them all as pirates!
