MD looking into Aston DB9, other options available?

MB SL55 AMG is the only other thing I can think of. At the OPs price point, there aren't really any other high-end GT cars that fit the bill. It's not quite supercar money, but you wouldn't want to end up with something like a 645ci.

Edit- The XKR looks good but it just doesn't seem as special as an Aston Martin or even an SL55 imo.

This is probably the alcomahol talking, but I swear I'm dead on with the last bit of my earlier post.

'97 Bentley Turbo R...

As lovely as they are, I would have thought if a DB9 was the reference point, the Turbo R won't cut it. You can chuck them around a lot more than it's weight should really allow but it's not going to be close to the handling of the Aston and its performance is dire.

The R8 seems a decent idea but it falls down on the interior in comparison, the ride is relatively comfortable but the Aston is where I'd want to be if I were piling on the miles. Biggest issue is that you won't get the V10 with the budget, but he may not care.

I see the R8 as more of a competitor to a GTR than an Aston personally. Perhaps it's the ultra modern styling (read:chav tackyness) that makes me think that.

I think it's because it's more of a sports car than a GT car.

The Aston has 4 (Albeit 2 are rather comedy) seats and a big boot, the Audi has a small boot and 2 seats.

It is, but you could squeeze it into the GT category as it has a fairly friendly ride, same as you can with a Gallardo. Probably pushing it a bit, but it's an option at least.

The GT-R is a 2+2 with a big boot as well, but the ride won't cut the mustard in the AM / SL / Bentley company and the interior is not plush enough. The R8 is a GT alternative if you have a more of a lean towards something a bit crisp, but again, doesn't excel in the areas that a potential DB9 customer would probably require or want.

As you say, different cars, different needs.

Make sure your MD test drives them all. :)

Tell him to stop being tight and get a DBS. :p

Am I the only one thinking £40-£60k is a lot to drop on a 5-6 year old DB9?

There is no choice, apart from a different Aston really in my eyes.

He can have a nice car that sounds like something amazing and is (relativly) practical and he won't look like too much ***k driving it. That and people seem to give Aston drivers a level of respect that a lot of other cars don't command (certainly in this country anyway).

That's the only thing I would be concerned about. As fox keeps telling us, a car doesn't immediately fall apart from out of warranty, but a warranty is a very nice, warm, fuzzy blanket when you're spending this kind of money on a car that can very easily throw up big bills. Possibly less so that something Italian, but still, something to think about. :o

Jag XK. Certainly get a newer one for the same price as the Aston, still stunning looking and comes with a juicy v8. IMO a massively underated car.

I seem to remember in 2004 Clarkson said something like;

So if you want a “safe” car you buy a Volvo. If you want a “reliable” car, you buy a Volkswagen. And if you have a small “penis” you buy a BMW. If you want a “fast” car, buy a Ferrari. If you want a “Volkswagen”, buy a Bentley Continental GT.

If you want a “perfect” car, you simply have to have a DB9.

Did he buy one?

Yeah, go mad and spend £40k under his budget on (what is essentially) an almost 20 year old Vauxhall family saloon car.

Its so amusing isnt it, its as if some people give 'advice' without even making a token effort to relate to the person the car is for. I mean... a Lotus Carlton, thats really going to appeal to somebody tempted by a DB9 isnt it? I bet Aston dealers are fed up of losing potential sales to people who chose instead to buy a really fast but really really old Vauxhall.

I genuinelly think some people read a thread like this and, bizarrely, interpret it not as 'Please spec my boss a car' but 'Please type the name of the first car you can think of into your head'.
