Official OMG I've finally got my 5830 thread

its not a flop
but you have to wonder what they were thinking of saturating the market with all those derivatives of cypress when nvidia hasnt got a reply for it till later this month.
everyone at this price point should get the 5770. I think that will be the card most will buy.

That is not true. If you purchase a Powercolor card (or any other item) from Overlockers or any other UK retailer you are fully covered by the retailer for 1 year. Some manufacturuers (Asus, MSI etc) do offer longer warranties but to say Powercolor cards have "no support or warranty whatsoever" is scaremongering and false. This card has the same (low) chance of failure as any other brand.

The retailer you buy equipment from and the support they provide is more important than any manufacturers direct warranty (within the first year atleast). I own an Asus 5850 which holds a 3 year warranty, but that does not put me off of Powercolor or any other brand.

All the retailer does is contact the AIB on your behalf. Some sites take it upon themselves to "make things right" with **** companies like Powercolor who take 3 months to even reply and don't even have contact details for the general public, but more often than not it's "they told us to tell you to get stuffed". Happened to me, with a well-known and supposedly reputable site on a 4870x2 that I paid £340 for - within the 1 year it broke and after 2 RMAs I was only offered £140 refund.

AVOID.

There are two basic issues with the 5830 release.
i). Performance is much worse than anticpated. Disabling half the ROP's has resulted in too big a hit, and these cards struggle (compared to 5850's) at higher resolutions and settings.
ii). Pricing is too close to 5850. ATI have attempted to correct/justify this by increasing the cost of 5850's, but a 5830 is much more akin to the 5770 performance wise and should be "just above" 5770, rather than "just below" 5850 pricing.

The fact that a 5850 offers 95% of 5870 performance when overclocked just makes matters worse for the 5830. A massively overclocked 5830 will still lag behind a stock 5850 at medium to high resolutions. It is rare that top end cards offer a better price/performance balance than "mid-range" cards but in this case the 5850 is clearly superior.

I understand what you are saying, but Powercolor and all other manufacturers have no reason to deal with end-users directly. Some manufacturers (to their credit) do offer good service, but this transfers directly into the cost of their products and is largely unnecessary due to UK consumer law placing the burden on the Retailer.

When your car breaks down do you contact the manufacturer or on of their registered Dealers? If you buy a new sofa and it arrives damaged do you contact the manufacturer or complain to the store where you bought it? If Tesco's deliver bad eggs do you complain to the farmer?

Can you read? I went through the retailer and Powercolor told them to sod off, which in turn means the customer gets told to sod off, but perhaps slightly more sugar-coated than that.

Some companies understand what a reasonable expectation of warranty support is, but not the cheap crap Chinese tat brands like Powercolor. They're only interested in bulk selling and undercutting the other brands, they view customer service as an unnecessary hassle and expense.

Orangey u need to star out your swearing and then read the rules again.

as for the 5830 i think it'll be good if the price was much lower..

The way I see it it's this:

Gap in terms of performance position:
5770---5830-------5850 (3:7)

Gap in terms of price position:
5770--------5830--5850 (8:2)

Value for money? Hell not!

should had been 5:5 for both! At the current price, the 5830's performance should be just no more than 20% slower than 5850.

Once again, your contract is with the RETAILER. If the RETAILER did not provide you with a replacement card then it is the RETAILER that you have a problem with. They have the legal responsibility to adhere to your consumer rights, independent of services the manufacturer may or may not provide.

In short, buy from a reputable retailer and and this type of issue will not occur.

Then you should have put trading standards onto the retailer. It is totally up to the retailer to sort any problems out during the first 12 months. Sounds like you were fobbed off and fell for it.

It WAS a reputable retailer, Sc@n (think you can work that out...) in fact. But they won't authorize any refund or replacement unless the AIB OKs it on their end first. So Poowercolor are at fault, how hard is that to grasp really.

And I did not "fall for" anything, I just didn't have patience for the waste of time and hassle that is small claims court. I have seen people with other brands of graphics cards get a better result after their customer service people leant on the retailer, that obviously couldn't happen with Poowercolor as they have NONE except maybe one semi-retarded 12 year old Chinese child labourer whose only knowledge of English comes from playing Starcraft.

ATI just wants to saturate the market with their cards and push Nvidia out of the picture.

I read the [H] review, they gave it a gold!!! :o pmsl

Apparently the MSRP stateside is $240. That translates to £160. Add VAT and it's £190. The 5850 is supposed to be £200... you can't raise the price if supply is improving and demand is stable or lowering...
