MGS4 - help me like it!!

When I had a ps3, I got MGS4 it just seemed totally random, some guy prancy about in lycra holding his back...

I never played any previous games, it is really inaccessible to someone new to the series.

Also found some random dude shouting sssnnnnnaaaakkkkkkeeeee everytime I died was lol worthy.

In my top 3 best games of all time.

I find MGS4 not as stealth worthy as 1 and 2, but it still plays beautifully.

Currently playing through it agian, just downed crying wolf. Wish they would add trophys.

i thought the 3rd (Snake Eater) was the best so far in the series so I don't really see it as a dying franchise. from start to finish i really really enjoyed that game. but yeh 4 is a bit OTT with the cut scenes, but they are all relevant for players who have played the other games. i thought the cutscenes were acceptable.

but please for your sake, play the 3rd :p

I really want to go back to MGS4 as I've yet to complete it, unfortunately though I've become a bit of a trophy whore recently and the lack of trophy support is stopping it going to the top of my 'need to go back to' list

If they brought out a trophy pack I'd be all over it like a rat up a drain pipe :D

Brilliant game though :)

I will personally send you £1 if you finish it :)

Not a patch on the Splinter Cell games imo

Are you, you know, okay?

This MGS is a dying franchise and i found the last one so god damn boring I gave up

No its not a dying franchise. It may be an ending franchise due to the story coming to an end. But you say dying as though it's getting bad, and its not. You didnt enjoy it, that by no means points to the franchise being in trouble

Funny enough, i have just started MGS4...

I thought MGS 1 and 2 were incredible, so i was also excited to play number 4. I must say i am let down by the game, it's no where near as good as 1 and 2 :( It's just not epic. It's not a stealth game anymore, you can just run and gun...and that's on hard mode too. Shame.

MGS3 is with out a doubt the best in the series (also i would say its the best game on the ps2), mgs4 was just a let down after that, 3 by design or by accident was a fantastic game they tried to recreate the moving story and epic feel for mgs4 and failed.

MGS4 is my favourite out of the lot. The quality of the game throughout is fantastic. Playing style may be slightly different with its action orientation, but anyone who can feel it is less epic by the end must have some form of retardation.

Stick out the beginning and get your teeth into it! Then once its completed, if you have to, trade it in against FF13.. which I've just started and is also fantastic.

The point is you can play it how you want to. You can get through the entire game in under 5 hours without getting seen on the hardest difficulty if you want (which actually unlocks an emblem upon completion), and likewise, you can also gun your way through (although it is very hard to run 'n' gun on the hardest difficulties).

That's also why the online is excellent. If it wasn't for the fact you almost NEED a headshot to win a gunfight, I'd play it a lot more often. You can play it how you like. In most games, there's little point trying to be stealthy because you'll either end up behind on points and losing anyway, or suck at it and get killed a lot, however in MGO, it is very possible to win matches using nothing but the knife and stealth.

If you're able to do a level without shooting or causing alerts then that's how I want to do it, but it doesn't really seem like the game wants you too. Everything's a bit messy.
For example, in previous games, you had a nice radar screen, showing you exactly where people were, where they were looking, where they were going etc... Now there's just ambiguous fuzzy blobs which is pretty much no use at all!!
If anything, this makes the sneaking part of the game more serious. Just because your precious MGS1 radar and perfect "blue cone" vision enemies isn't there to make sneaking ludicrously easy does not mean the game doesn't want you to. It means the game is trying to get you to sneak on your own and without drawing the route on your screen.
Plus the levels themselves (I've only done the first few) don't seem to be particularly condusive to sneaking.
An example for that is getting into the rebel safehouse thingy near the beginning of the game..
In previous games there were routes you could take that combined with paying attention to guards and using corners, boxes, lockers etc would get you to the objective with no alerts, but with the safehouse you have to cross open ground with a full on firefight going on directly in front of the door. It just doesn't feel as neat and clean as the other games.
This incarnation is more about "battlefield sneaking" than actual sneaking. There is a war going on and this is what you're supposed to blend into. It means there's a massive gunfight that you don't have to get involved with, and that occasionally makes it easier for you to sneak through. Keep at it.
