Elgar To Be Made Illegal

Who in the hell is Adam Smith, anyway :/ and more to the point, why would I want him on my bank notes?

guy who wrote the wealth of nations

big advocate of free markets

well ahead of his time etc..etc..

tbh.. I reckon he was a pretty good choice for the £20 note

^Adam is a very apt choice for bank notes.

Are you practising to be a Daily Mail headline writer?

This.

Way to beaf up sentiment for no reason (and the Times, with its agenda).

It is an old design being faded out as it is apparently easier to forge than newer designs. Nothing to do with notions of nationality, or the fact England is yet again getting leaned upon by the gingers from the north.

The PM and his predecessor, tennis, bank notes etc etc etc.. good god whatever next. Quick, hide them under the rug. It'll be ok.

Would this be a problem for the OP and the editor of the Times if Smith was English?

The bank was founded by a Scotsman anyway so I don't see too much of an issue with a Scotsman being on one of the notes.

Was only until just after WW2 that it stopped being privately owned too.

You're reading too much into it. It was a quasi-inflammatory thread topic which has obviously gone over the heads of too many.

I couldn't really care less if a Scotsman is on the new design, Smith certainly deserves it. It was a merely nostalgic poke at the passing of an era of sorts.

You really are a sensitive old chap when it comes to Englishmen, or anyone else for that matter, passing comment on the Scots, whether it be serious or in light-hearted jest - the jest you oft miss. I'd suggest lightening up old bean, it's really not that important. We are, for the time being, in the same United Kingdom after all.

I suppose for the record I should just state that I'm not lamenting the removal of Elgar because he is English and being replaced by a Scotsman, but more the removal of a great figure, his nationality is irrelevant (to me). At least, I suppose, he isn't being replaced by a winner of Big Brother.
