I despair of the Human Race...

Then no-one will be able to work due to criminal records and we really are screwed if that happens.
Criminal records for most crimes should be wiped clean at 16/18.

The real problem is cost. The wealthy do not want to pay for what is seen as an overwhelming poor problem.

no, they would just make sure that anyone that goes through a 're-education center' has their criminal record removed, or introduce legislation making it illegal to discriminate against people with young offenders records.

Most prospective employers are already prohibited from asking for any juvenile criminal records I think?

The problem is a lack of respect, starting with a lack of self-respect for these people. Give them hope for their future and they will start to respect themselves and others. At the moment if you live on one of these estates you have no future.

I'd have to agree - but it's certainly no justification.

The cops have very few powers over minors.

I think the law needs changing, any kid over the age of 6 knows the difference between right and wrong. If they are too stupid to understand or just don't care and break the law then they should be prosecuted.

Hold up a second, if a child is "too stupid to understand" then they clearly don't have capacity to be charged with a crime. They may require some form of sanctions against them that are appropriate to their age and understanding but charging people with crimes when they do not have the capacity to understand them is a very, very bad idea and runs counter to the basic principles of our law.

Young offenders institutes are a must, lets arrest them, re-educate them and try to sort the modern problem with young groups of yobs!

I remember my granddad telling me about his childhood, they used to steal gates and apples, the police would get them, give them a slap and drag them home by the ear. Shame they can't do similar now.

Perhaps that would help but I've got my doubts that violence is really going to teach children a better form of behaviour - let's not forget that the people saying "ah in my day I use to get beaten by my parents and look how I turned out" are also the ones who've raised this generation (or the previous generation who are raising this one) so maybe they shouldn't be so quick to pass the blame.

You know thats rubbish.

It got this bad when parents didn't raise their children. Just let them run riot and wonder why they're stupid, jobless and involved in disgraceful crime.

Between the choice of living in 1850s London and current London (or almost anywhere) I'll take the present any time - it's something of a myth that crime was not prevalent in the past. Places like Gin Alley should serve as an illustration that drunkenness and lawlessness are hardly modern inventions.

There's a fascinating theory in criminology that crimes against the physical person (e.g. assault as a blue collar crime) are more likely to lead to a custodial sentence generally speaking than crimes against property (e.g. embezzlement as a white collar crime) due to the demographics of those most likely to commit said crimes. However that's about all criminology is to me, a series of fascinating theories that won't actually solve anything.

worse:

they only got manslaughter....

"Mr Atherton, described by prosecuting barrister Patrick Harrington QC as "alone, alcoholic and mentally dysfunctional", was forced into letting the gang use his flat on St Katherine's Way in Warrington to drink and smoke cannabis.
The teenagers subjected him to regular abuse and humiliation - a practice they called "terroring".

The abuse included pouring bleach and Pot Noodles onto him, daubing his face with ink and make-up, burning his hair, urinating on him and vandalising his flat. It also included regular beatings, of increasing ferocity."

""Ultimately, and almost inevitably, the result was that the two defendants killed Mr Atherton by beating him savagely and throwing him into the River Mersey on May 8 last year."

It existed no doubt but there was significantly less sick crimes such as today.

How many dogs were burned alive for fun in 1850? I can't see it being very many.
Or maybe taunting a mentally ill person for kicks? Can't see it happening myself.

Parents don't know how to raise their kids these days, back then people did a bit better.
Not so many groups of scum hanging around looking for people to rob, drinking special brew but still wearing expensive clothes? (How anyone can let their kids do that is a mystery to me)

I hardly think that GMP can be singled out as solely responsible.

They have a statement from the family where they have been given high praise for their efforts but with cases such as this it is very much a multi agency approach and that seems to be the failing here.

The parents of those kids have a lot to answer for as well.

Stuff like this sickens me to the core.

Stupid little Bar stewards should be sent to work in the most degrading circumstances.

Folk wonder why Gerbils eat their young!!!!!

You have as much of a future as you decide to make for yourself, you still have a free education provided for you by the state - the fact that you chose to not make full use of it is your own fault.

rarely have I ever considered killing people, but I would have no hesitation in killing all those who participated in this horrific abuse.

Lets say you had a magic button that would kill everyone you describe. (therefore no-one will ever know) and it only comes down to a question of morals/ethics etc

Would you press it?

Discipline and Respect are the two things missing from society today.
This is the kind of thing that happens when children are raised by parents who just don't give a **** about what their brats are doing as long as it doesn't interfere with their lives.
