I had scratching issues with my Xbox 360 DVD drive so bought a replacement off the bay. It is exactly the same model number as the original so am i right in thinking its just a case of swapping it over?

No because the keys on the drive are tied to the motherboard.

Easiest thing would be to try swapping the PCBs between the drives, and see if that works. Not sure if it works for all models, but I did it once with a Samsung or Hitachi drive.

I'm doing the same thing, except I have just realised I purchased a benq instead of a liteon (christ they are similar), so now my next job is to take the laser from the benq and try it in my original liteon.

If that fails, im buying a playstation :D

Ah bugger was hoping i wouldnt have to mess about with it.

Swapping the PCB's is a doddle, maybe 15 minutes work.

It's flashing the drives which is a pita!

email me in my trust if youd like a hand with anything or some pointers as i deal with these things on a daily basis :)

I spoke to someone on the jungleflasher irc channel last night about flashing my new benq drive with my liteon key, he said I shouldn't as it will likely get me blocked from xbox live.

Does that sound right to you?

the easiest way to do it is to swap the pcb's over inside the dvd drive. this is easy with the older drivers as it is all ribbons but the newer benq and lite-on drives require you to solder some wires to the pcb which even still is a quick 5 min job(or ghetto cut and twist them together). i replaced my lite-on drive last week as microsoft wanted 98 pound to repair my 5 month old refurb that they sent me in return for my 3rrod!

yeah sums it up pretty much as the lt fws are less patched and it presumes your "backups" are fully complient ssv2 etc and if you have a fw with benq "osid/inquiry" strings etc and the drive gets queried as a lite on your pretty much naffed its a risk and lite'ons dont have any original firmwares about as far as i know that could have changed recently. which i doubt. also benq drives require soldering to swap the pcb which is a skill/art in itself its easier just sourcing a new benq drive or just paying ms 60 quid to repair the drive and get extra warranty on said item

@cliffy what drive did you have hitatchi/samsung ? my moneys on hitatchi lol :p

Well I went ahead and swapped the laser over from the new benq in to my lite-on and also used the new ribbon, didn't work. I then realised I put the ribbon in upside down, swapped it around and now it's working perfectly. Surprisingly easy to do and now I don't have any issues with any of my discs, not bad for £20 and half an hour!!

Yup, I bought a replacement drive as I thought I could jut swap it in, then I read up on it and rather than buying a liteon laser as well I just used the one from the benq.

Trust me to do it backwards but there ya go :D

Just come across this thread. The laser has a barcode on it. Sometimes when "modifying" drives this barcode data is corrupted and sometimes needs to be inputted manually reading from the labels. Im not saying this barcode data from the laser is stored in the drives firmware, nor am i saying MS are able to detect this data (or lack of in this case, your new laser will have a different barcode to the one you replaced). If MS are able to detect this change then you *might* get banned from live for technically modifying/repairing your box.

Please note this is all hearsay, as people dont know actually know how they ban and what data they are able to recieve from the box.
