Morons who dislike being overtaken

How about driving between 2 cars on a roundabout where there is barely enough room for 2 cars side be side? Saw a biker do that last night on the way home and wondered why he didn't wait 10 seconds till he'd past the roundabout.

It's hard for me to defend the action of a biker without the full details, but every day, during rush hour on my way home from work, where the traffic is stagnant or slow moving, I do exactly that. It's called filtering and there's nothing wrong with it.

and i wasnt...

if im doing 60 mph, and someone needs to do 80mph on the same road to overtake is that safe?

Surely it depends what road? I have roads near me that are as wide as runways and straight as an arrow. You seem to be suggesting that 60mph is perfectly safe, but 70mph means you're going to crash and burn?

So you're just stirring? Speed is a subjective subject. We all drive at different levels. The fact is if you go out on the road you should do so in the awareness that there is always someone faster than you, more stupid than you and accidents are going to happen whether you're at fault or not. We can't escape that becasue we're all human and do stupid things from time to time, or all the time.

I have no doubt that you can overtake at x speed regardless of the limit safely, its possible, its not legal by our own human restrictions but it is safe none the less. You can't just read into every situation on the road from your armchair. Every inch of our roads is different, everyones car is different and every driver is different. It's about reading the road and conditions at that very moment and that is what driving instructiors teach day in day out and prepare you for. There's no high horse situation to get into on a web forum about the stories in this thread because you just weren't there.

What is clear though is road users are getting very selfish and therefore dangerous on the road. I think those of us who have been in this situation can agree on that. We know what's right and wrong. Anyone smart enough to pass their driving test can work that out I'm sure, so other road users who use their car as a barrier to other road users are dangerous selfish morons regardless of what speed the other car is traveling.

No what im trying to point out is that there are speed limits usually because of the type of road and traffic around the area.

There are roads i go above the speed limit but if its high anyway why bother going over.

People saying that they halve their journey time or whatever are implying they go above the speed limit everywhere. Well how can you halve your journey time on one road?

Yeah if its a motorway or a really long road where you can see for quite a distance then fair enough. It will lower your travel time but doing it on a country road or a short journey is just stupid.

The mentality of "its none of your business" outlines why there are ******** on the road who are inconsiderate to others.

Its non of your business is it, if some moron wants to do 80 mph and kill himself why can't you just let him (as that moron may be someone like me in several instances and I am still here typing this!). The fact is that (it seems from your posts) that people like you seem to take it on yourself to protect humanity by preventing/impeding people from overtaking - involving yourself in business that does not concern you (from Beverly Hills Cop II!).

I do lots and lots of A-road and Motorway miles, far too much for what a doctor should. Sometimes it is after night shifts but usually in the day when I am fresh. After a night shift the drive usually is quite calm and relaxed and I stick to usually less than 70 mph (where appropriate) and let people fly by no problems.

However during the day in good weather conditions I do like to make speedy progress and this involves overtaking. The number of times I come up behind (and yes Clarkson is right) usually Audi drivers (in their 2.0 TDI A4 or similar) who either just don't look in their mirrors or choose to ignore you and sit at 'insert chosen speed' when there is room to move over in the left lane is huge. I got to say BMW drivers are a lot better now, not like 10 years ago! They just will not move, so then you have to flash them, then see them waving and gesturing +/- actually getting out of the way, then as your barge your way past, them trying to accelerate with their derv power to keep up, its so predictable! British behaviour at its best!

Obviously if someone wants to get past me regardless of what speed I am doing, I am more than happy to move over and let them take the high ground. Sometimes you meet them 2 miles up the road with a car with blue lights on the hard shoulder!!!

Let me make it clear, i dont prevent anyone from overtaking. I just let them and make room for them to do so. Im saying it annoys me and i dont understand why they do it for very little gain.
Going back to the quote you made, the guy has just overtaken me. +1 for him, hes now driving infront of me doing roughly the same speed. What was the point? I find this even more annoying when im in a queue leaving a gap between myself and the car infront and some idiot decides he wants to get in that gap because hell be slightly further ahead.

On single carriage ways if I am going slower than the car behind, I will often indicate to the left (when I believe its safe for them to overtake) showing that I will let them pass, sometimes even go as far as to pull over in a layby to let people pass.

My man hood does not shrink in size by doing this, I just find helping people pass you is a lot less stressful than the person behind making stupid attempts at over takes into bends.

The thing that annoys me is when I am driving down dual carriage ways or motorways and I pull out into lane two to let someone on to the motorway and when you are about to pull back in, the person you let on to the motorway then undertakes you rather than letting you back into lane one.

Yeah I get it all the time, some idiot in a zafira (It's ALWAYS A BLOODY PEOPLE CARRIER!!!!) doing about 40 on a stretch of NSL b road.
Started to pass him and he sped up, I just booted it, made a couple of hand gestures where he could see them and went about my journey. Admittedly leaving a lot of diesel smoke in my tracks.

So what you are saying is, its ok to break the lower speed limits, which generally are there for a reason, but not the NSL which is simply a blanket speed limit?

Overtaking is fun.

Where are you pulling these imaginary statements from?

You said you do go over speed limits, but not when the speed limit is already high enough (i'm assuming 60's).

So are you saying that you'll speed in 30's and 40's (where the speed limit is normally low for a reason), but stick to the speed limit in 60's because it's high enough already?

That seem's awfully backwards. It's the total opposite for me. I do 30 in 30's and 40 in 40's, but occasionally do 70-80 on 60 roads.

the worst thing about making the effort to over take is when you get to the junction at the end of the road and the sedate MPV you overtook a mile ago slowly pulls up behind you :(

Same, 30mph zones and to a lesser extent 40mph zones serve a purpose (to protect kids) however a 60mph zone usually has a limited number / no people on foot, provided the conditions are good i see no problem exceeding this limit.

Nail on the head.

However, I think speeds higher than 80 can be safe on long straights with high visibility, there is one particular road over here where three figures is perfectly safe on several sections.
