UbiSoft servers are down again this weekend

Someone suggested on another forum that they should remove the DRM after a fixed period - say 6 months or a year - as a compromise. Anyone that really wants to play the game is not going to wait that long for a cracked release and is therefore more likely to pay. After that sort of period the game would probably be bargain bin anyway.

They do anyway.

They nerly always remove online drm like this after a few months.

Costs more to maintain than it prevents.

That would be funny, then they wouldn't be able to do things like get car insurance easily :D

"Ah i see you have a criminal record *reads closely* for uploading a youtube frag video with the copyrighted song "You Spin Me Round" playing in the background. Well i'm sorry sir but unfortunately our policy forbids us from covering you as you're a liability"

Splinter Cell5 is 100% confirmed as using the exact same DRM on PC so if you want to buy that on April 16th you can go for this DRM or buy the 360 version instead as its exclusive to MS platforms only. I'm not buying the PC version with this DRM & many others feel the same way so Splinter Cell5 is not likely to continue on PC in future & previously it was one of the strongest PC game series but now Ubisoft are sticking to their guns with the DRM (I do not blame them really either as they have talked for years about massive PC piracy issues).

SC3 took a year to crack withouth using online DRM. Can't they use and update the DRM used on that or is the type of DRM used in SC3 completely useless now?

Starforce 3.0 was the DRM but it was dropped by most publishers after it became obvious it was causing issues with optical drives breaking or being unable to function properly. SC3 encrypted all game files (not just the .exe) with Starforce which is why it took so long to be broken. Outside of Russia few companies use it nowadays but it was actually better compared to this online DRM!

How can something that can break your PC be better than needing to have an Internet connection?

i didn't say it was better :) best thing is no DRM.. simple serial number is good enough.. people who buy games will buy them anyway.. you wont force pirates to buy them.. same with me if i like/enjoy game i do buy it.. if it lasts me 2hrs for 20quid no thanks.. some developers cant be bothered to release a demo.. pffts

I love the way everyone is blaming the publisher for the actions of pirates...

I still stand by DRM removal and making copyright infringement and distribution criminal offences, it would seem to happily solve the complaints about inappropriate use of DRM while still ensuring that intellectual property is protected, I can't understand why so many are opposed to the idea... Apart from that they want DRM removed so they can take intellectual property without consent more easily...

I personally think the DRM has nothing to do with stopping piracy and everything to do with killing the second hand market. (which also makes the publisher no money)
