Which Brand SSD?

I am thinking of either getting a 120GB or 2 x 60GB (in RAID 0) for my Windows and programs and was wondering what brand to get. I have read/heard good things about OCZ, but which others should I be considering. I think my maximum budget would be £350.

I currently have a 150GB Velociraptor, and although it is fast, I want to try something better :D

They come in various sizes so I wouldn't restrict yourself to a specific capacity, rather look for something in the ballpark. For that budget the Intel 160GB springs to mind. You'll notice a huge performnace gain even compared to the speedy VR. Note that you will lose TRIM support in RAID if that bothers you?

IIRC, Tom's Hardware did a thorough benching of the SSDs and found that the intel suffered the least performance degradation over time, even before TRIM was introduced. Would be worth checking that out further, as TRIM may have levelled the performance difference between the drives.

Also, the intel use a quality controller - one issue affecting many of the other manufacturers (Samsung first gen drives were infamous for it) was a "micro-stutter" at the desktop, caused by poor performance on the 4k read/writes to the page file. Would also be worth checking what controller any drive you're looking at come with and googling it and microstutter I'd suggest.

I went for the first gen Intel drive and have had no complaints thus far.

I have to agree with the previous poster. Google the drive and review and there's lots of info out there. They aren't cheap but their controller and results look very good. As a second choice I would probably say OCZ although Crucial don't look bad. Note that if the test is on say a 256GB drive a 64GB may be slower in some areas, don't ask me exactly why!

get 3 of these in raid0:-http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-013-OC&tool=3

these drives in raid0 will blow away any single ssd

with 3 you will get 600 mbs read and about 460mbs write

make sure to flash the dirves with the new 1.5 firmware

that way u dont have to worry about trim not passing through the raid controller

1.5 firmware is top notch and the drives will not degrade in raid0

any other make of ssd will lose performance over time when used in raid0

the ocz firmware will keep them always as fast as day 1

if u want speed and good value and no performance loss in raid0 they are hard to beat and will make youw velociraptor look ancient

i have been using 3x ocz agility in raid0 since may 09 and the new firmware is awesome for raid0
