New CPU for video/photo editing

The guy wants to spend £350-£500... Who gives a rats ass how much the price difference is between the 2 processors. The performance gain may be worth it, Let the OP decide if it is and stop being so childish!

I do a lot of encoding, I do a lot of transcoding, I do a lot of photoshopping. If thats all I did on the system, I'd get the I5. Why? because the speed differences in the actually applications counts for something to me, and I'd want to spend the extra to get them.

I'd actually get I7 in reality due to gaming on the system also, but the OP isnt gaming.

...Dont be silly. The I5 750 thats been mentioned in this thread out performs the spec'd AMD at stock. By quite a notable margin, Yes it costs extra, but to someone doing video and photo editing, it'll be worth the extra. Well actually thats for the OP to decide isnt it.

The benchmarks are within this very thread, so to say "could just as well go with the athlon" Its obvious you dont know the performance differences. And if you do know them it would be an idea to be clearer to the OP, who may take what you said to mean that the I5 spec'd in this thread performs the same as the AMD.

I've never said the i5 isn't faster but if u're going to keep it at stock, can just as well take the athlon and save some cash as the difference isn't all that big. It's the extra overclockability of the i3/i5/i7 that brings them to the front since the athlon won't go higher than 3.6 and i5 will do anything up to 4.2-4.3 with good cooling, that's where the real difference in performance comes out, the difference with stock is at best around 25% and usually within 5-15% on avarage which could be quite easily neglated with slight fsb bump on stock cooler as the athlons stay super cool.

Either go all, get half decent 20-25quid cooler for i5 and OC it to 3.8-4.0 or save yourself some dough and get athlon.
Let me underline again, nobody is saying the i5 isn't faster, but if he isn't going to squeeze it up to 3.8+ then that means he doesn't need the extra power, if he doesn't need the extra power then he can just as well do with something slower like the athlon which let's be honest, is *slower* but *isn't slow* at all.

But please, don't buy the i5 to run it at stock speeds.... it's a waste of money.

I'd remind all "contributers" to this thread that we are trying to conduct a calm, polite and civil discussion about what is a nice "solution" to Big Bang's need . . .

Let's leave some nice, friendly feedback for the O.P please! . . . in the hope that one day he will come back to the forums and read it . . . I'm pretty sure he's run a mile after seeing this thread! :D

He's probably gone somewhere more professional where silly arguements are kept to a minimum

I agree,

This thread should have been closed pages ago.

I have specced the correct system for the OP for video editing and photoshop etc..

In his Budget of between 300-500

The die hard AMD lovers will just not leave things alone.

They make some of these threads laughing stocks...Arguing a point that does not even exist.

Its not nice solution.

Its the best solution for his budget.

Get it?

This was answered on Page one.

My i5 combo for 306 quid.

Add a 20 quid GFX card and a http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-022-CP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=169

And he has all he needs for a kick ass multimedia workhorse.

+1 for the AMD spec, they're great I love them sooo much...........I love them that much that anyone would think I'm gainfully employed by them.
