Cyclists: Run em down

Afaik no-one tries to kill lorry drivers on a daily basis or encourages taking further risks with their lived.

Are you saying that drivers deliberately try to murder cyclists in the street every day?

If it is that dangerous, it is a wonder you are still alive to post...

Ok, so far for cyclists, no sense of humour and a massive amount of hyperbole too. :D

Good posts [DOD]Asprilla.

Tefal, I'm a cyclist with insurance, the fact it costs £30 a year tells you how much damage I'm likely to do a car driver...lol

Okay, for those who hate cyclists en masse, why don't you try cycling through rush hour yourself and see just how badly the 'average' driver behaves never mind the idiots.

I always wait at traffic lights, I never cycle on the pavement and I always stay close to the kerb (as close as I can be without cycling through all the roadside crap). Anyhoo, not too long ago I was cycling past roadworks and the workers had reduced the width of the road in such a way that no matter how close I rode to the fence they had erected, it still wasn't enough room for a car to get by me.

The fencing was only about 100 yards so it wasn't as if anyone behind would have to wait long but this didn't deter a private cab driver who proceeded to sound her horn continuously as she drove up behind me. I ignored it and continued on my way only to have her ram my back wheel as she screamed obscenities out of the window of her car. I tumbled off my bike but quickly got back up to hear this idiot explain her actions but she seemed not to want to face up to me and proceeded to smash into the fence and speed off into the distance. So, because she couldn't wait an extra 15 seconds for me to get out of the way she committed an assault with a deadly weapon, caused an accident and refused to stop. She also needed a respray going by the amount of paint left on the fencing. Absolute idiot.

Sounds more like an "idiot" driver than an "average" driver to me but we could go round and round this point all day :)

I think making a joke of driving cars into cyclists will make people think it's ok. It is not.

Shouting "run em down" then going "I was just joking boss" is that sort of mentality you see outside nightclubs late at night. It's not a defense then, and it isn't now.

I'm not. We had the exact same scenario here a few months ago with James Martin in his column in the Mail on Sunday.

Dont see how James Martin becomes involved... I am talking specifically about Jeremy Clarkson who most ppl would say could have written the script for the guy mentioned in the OP.

Everyone would "expect" Clarkson to say inflammatory things like this and they would then disregard it in the same breath without so much as missing a beat.

I ride 170 miles a week commuting. Incidents of note this week are:

Tuesday morning, riding up the bus lane on Shepherd's Bush rd and a woman in a Q7 pulls a meter into the road causing me to take evasive action.

Wednesday morning, same road (different junction) and a cab pulls out. I emergency stop. Driver mouths the words known to all cyclists; "Sorry mate, didn't see you."

Friday evening, Lower Richmond road, a white van pulls out of a junction on the right, turning right. Just pulls straight into my lane almost forcing me off the road.

Same thing happens when a Fiesta pulls out of Sunbury Lane in Walton on Thames as I cycle down Terrace Road later on the same ride. I also got cut up at the roundabout when a 207 left less than a foot clearance from my front wheel when I went round the roundabout and they went straight across.

Most drivers who don't cycle put cyclists at risk on a regular basis, they just don't realise.

Oh Jeezie Chreezie. You think it was a serious suggestion?

The problem is that some people will think it is.

So at what point did they deliberatly and knowingly try to kill you?

So at what point did they deliberatly and knowingly try to kill you?

At least two of them saw me and still made manoeuvres that put my health and possibly my life at risk.

Semantically you're correct though.

Yeah, cyclists.

And drivers. I've had people drive at me telling me I shouldn't be on the road. Even if one person is influenced by this person then that's one too many.

Thats the difference tho. The post about the taxi driver hitting the cyclist wheel to "hurry them up" is entirely different from someone not realising.

Is this an excuse ?? No but there is a diff between deliberate and accidental/in-attention....

Unfortunaetly most drivers have their brain used to looking for other cars and bigger vehicles and their brain seems to (for want of a better explanation) filter out small vehicles like cycles and motorbikes. They ARE more difficult to see and, in particular to motorbikes due to their acceleration, they can appear from the strangest places almost instantly. The riders of these bikes may not always allow time for the car driver to register that they are there even though it is very obvious to the cyclist as they put themselves in that position.

Impossible but I would like to see the amount of near-misses and collisions between cars and cyclists caused by obvious aggression compared to the amount caused by lack of education/knowledge.
