EA follows Ubisoft, will sell titles with 'always on' DRM

Good post , all I would say is that with the current trend for dodgy console ports the technological envelope is hardly being touched nevermind pushed ;)

I don't own a current gen console (gamecube is my latest) so I don't even mind console ports, as long as they're competantly made & I'm not required to donate a blood sample to play. Whether the game is good or not is more important. As long as they aren't ALL we get, they're fine as part of a balanced diet.

What's sad is that, unlike some people, I don't think that all EA & UBISOFT games are worthless junk. Both companies have put out enough interesting games amongst the junk over the years (I can list plenty off the top of my head) & have enough interesting stuff on their upcoming list that I would be interested in some of them if not for this.

I remember the amount of moaning there was when games first started needing a net connection for 'activation'

This always online approach does seem silly and unnecessary

blah blah blah... i got an internet connection like the rest of the civilized word so i dont care, i'll enjoy the good games ea and ubisoft release and you'll not or you'll resort to piracy.

You can still enjoy the game via piracy as much as the paying customers.
Except when you are paying then you can't play if;

ISP has problems.
Routing Issues
EA/Ubisoft Server go down.
They stop supporting the game.
Want to play it on a laptop while doing lengthy travelling/away periods and don't/can't always be online.

?

Although, if I ever had those problems I would crack the game so I could play it offline on my lappy or something.

well lol.. they haven't cracked AC2 yet :OOO so EA is going to "flack" around trying to win some moneyz ;) it will be cracked anyway.. and the only losers will be the ones who paid for it

Ubi must be making a ton of money from AC2 regardless of whether people think the DRM makes no difference. I've lost count of the amount of people i've seen giving in and buying the game on the various pirate sites.

At this rate I'm going to end up buying games and having to also get pirated versions just so I can play them how games are intended.

do they want us to pirate their games ?
have they not learnt that all games get cracked and the only people who suffer are those who pay.

so they expect everyone to have a fully functioning internet at all times....so hey mum dad sis and little brother please dont be hogging all the bandwith, as even though im not playing online right now i still need a good connection or all my progress goes out the window and i will be kicked out of the game.

yeah sure son we will all just sit here and not use the internet incase your game gets interrupted :p

The always on drm will simply be properly cracked just a matter of time.

Just shows you how uninformed some of these company's are really.

well clearly they do make a lot.. but a lot is never enough.. they want to get all of it.. in my head it goes like this

if the game is good it will sell

if the game is rubbish it wont sell

if the game is good but messed up with DRM like this it will sell but they will lose customers because of it.. in 1-2 months the game will be cracked anyway.. and the only losers will be the publishers/developers and customers who paid.... after all this i dont really see a point in DRM?!?! :o

this does not bode well for me when crysis 2 comes out :/

i will not buy a 'always on inet' game, if thats the way its going, ill either install a patch or just give up on it, ill also not need any new computer bits

The publishers/developers are far from losing out, they're making more money off of this game than they would normally, they're quids in. They'll only lose out if they continue with the same DRM without perfecting the servers.

Things like this and Steam have really put me off PC gaming. I've always bought my games and sold them on after but it's obvious these methods are as much about killing the legal 2nd hand market as they are about stopping pirates.

Might move over to the dark side completely and play FPS games on my Xbox or just pirate everything from now on. Not paying £25-40 for a 6-7 hour game that I won't be able to sell because it's tied to me in some way.

perfecting the servers is one thing.. perfecting the CONNECTION for every user is another.. in UK we have it pretty good compared to some other countries..

i mean the Always Online thing is complete waste of time.. lets say you have a lappy.. with 3g.. how many times does that lose connection? quite a bit.. now this gets to the point where GAMING laptops are useless unless you are carrying a cable behind you..

in 10 years when the Internet is SO perfected there wont be such things as disconnection from 3g/wifi then this DRM will work.. now no..

not that i like the game or anything.. but i know they will be removing this DRM.. we had less "moaning" before the "spore" was released which had rubbish DRM but not as bad as this.. it wont last long.. its just too much for devs/publishers to hold off.. :o

I reckon it will become the standard copy protection system within 6 - 12 months just like disk checks and CD keys. There may be loads of people on 'internet forums' saying they'll never buy another UBI / EA product but whose to say they would have paid in the first place? AC2 still went into the top 10 - will be very interesting if UBI release actual sales figures compared to AC1.

(Its interesting that the DDOS attacks on Ubi stopped as soon as Metro 2033 was cracked - the pirates had something new to play so they lost interest?)

If this DRM means that publishers will start taking the PC market more seriously again I don't really have a problem with it.
