My new Saab

He is unable to replicate such figures in his 323i, so beleives its impossible to do so and that everyone who claims to be able to is a liar, rather than simply accept that perhaps his driving style isn't particularly good.

Ah well.. seeing as most of my driving is dual carriageway, I think my fuel consumption should be palletable enough :) Back to work tomorrow, so will reset the computer again and see what it says on friday

Gosh you change your mind like the wind dont you, most of your driving was sitting in traffic the other day.

No I do a lot of sitting in traffic, but most of my driving (by distance) is dual carriageway

44k miles on it, cost me £4k and a slightly tatty mondeo (which glass' values at 3k)

Wow 7k for that is good going, when my 900 was bought in 1998 (same age as yours) with 48k it cost £11,495. I do love the Aero versions of these, and especially the TurboX special. If i had to have a new car it would be one of these as a convertible in that lime green.

My 900 generally does between 35-45mpg on motorway runs (55-70mph) and about 28mpg around town. Combined i get between 30 and 33. The newer engines are more efficient vs the older ones due to the use of lighter internal components. (the old engines were over-engineered for the power they were used for)

Too many people think all petrol cars do 10mpg and the only way to get remotely decent economy is to buy a diesel.

Agreed, I have thought this in the past as well, and then I realised that I can get over 35 mpg out of my 220bhp petrol.

It's all about realistic real world figures, not going on some eco run and trying to convince world about misleading MPGz.

Well no, not really. All I ever said which began your silly little MPG crusade was that I was able to average a decent MPG figure of the entire duration of a long (300 mile) motorway journey. Thats not really misleading at all, frankly.

I'm not talking about you.....

Clearly you are because I'd not said a word on economy until AFTER you waded in with the usual tripe.

36mpg from a Aero isn't a real world mixed motoring figure.....as I said earlier, I'd be interested to know what the real world figure is as opposed to the best figure you can squeeze out of it at 70mph. All in the interests of useful real world information of course.

39.8mpz from a 530i isn't a realistic real world mixed motoring figure either. You must have the BlueMotion version.

Its not a real world figure but I never said it was. It also wasnt the best I can squeeze out of it at 70

He never at any point claimed it was - he simply reported his long distance economy figure.

I never once claimed it was a 'real world mixed motoring figure'. I have many, many times indicated the 'real world mixed motoring figure' of a 530i is circa 27-31mpg. 39.8mpg was the figure I attained on a 330 mile drive from one end of the country to the other exclusively using the Motorway network.

I never claimed it was anything but.

Why not? Sitting on the motorway at or slightly above the speed limit for a long trip seems fairly 'real world' to me.. He was remarking of decent (for what it is) MPG in that situation. Don't think he's expecting to see 36MPG blasting through town :)

It's very real world, it just isn't 'mixed'

Quite why it should be 'mixed' I've no idea, nobody but him has ever claimed it was..
