EA follows Ubisoft, will sell titles with 'always on' DRM

preordering gets you some good freebies, early delivery and a good deal.
I've never pre-ordered myself, ever, but if we're talking "freebies" of the [cloth map, plastic figurine, sparkly key-chain] variety, I don't see the appeal anyhow :p

I only pre order when the price is decent enough to warrant it. I never pre order at full price, hell I very rarely buy a game at full price.

Boo hoo. If you cant afford to have an internet connection that allows you to play Always on DRM games, that's your problem.

Next people will be moaning that games have a too high system requirement for them to play.

"Our games this", and "our games" that. Christ we live in a capitalist country (most of us on this forum anyway) and the games publishers can do what the hell they want.

If you can't handle always on DRM, don't play the games lol. And enough of the "lol they will get crushed and no one will buy their games". Really? Come on lol.

No real issue with this, even beneficial if it stops anyone from stealing the software (so more money made, so money money ploughed back into producing PC games hopefully).

Whether stuff has DRM on it or not I've never even noticed in any way whatsoever! I couldn't tell you which of my games have DRM on them and which don't! Out of my friends, the ones that have the biggest issue with DRM always seem to be the ones who steal software. Why is that?

I think there are far to many kids on here who have their parents internet connection all to themselves and don't yet live in the real world.

At the moment my PC is at the girlfriends, the flat she stays at is also shared with another 5 people. I have lost count of the amount of times someone has unplugged the Ethernet cable so they can patch in. Not to mention another 5 people in the flat possible torrenting or streaming media resulting in a slow, unreliable internet connection.

I have a friend who gets disconnected at random times on his ADSL line too. Pretty sure these are not unique occurrences but in fact problems many of us face all over the UK.

I can't wait for the time when the DRM has managed to abolish piracy, so all new games only cost a few quid.

Oh, and quote: "Christ we live in a capitalist country...". Are you quite well? We don't live in a capitalist country, we live in a free market economy (at least, that's what I'm always told by the capitalists). That's quite a difference.

drm wont abolish piracy. itl boost it. when the crakc comes out people will use that instead and it will come out. people who would have paid for the game will just crack it instead.
i agree with the 'silly kids thing'. when i was flat sharing with 5 other people the connection would drop out all the time. now i have a router supplied by 02 that drops out at least twice a day. i play single player games when my net connection has died so wtf is the point of buying one where i cant play if my nets packed up?

as for free market economies dont get me started
ps thats what thatcher decided would be a good idea when she went anf fukuked the country

I wonder if the recent BioWare (owned by EA of course) games require the always on connection. I know you need to sign on with an account to validate the install plus any addons. But does it say connected to the internet for the duration of the session?

I'm sorry but you're being very naive. I have a fast cable connection so in theory it should make no difference at all that I have to connect but in practice it does.

Why? Well I don't really feel like having my game interrupted or progress lost any time my cable goes down, or someone resets the router without warning me. I can guarantee you the large majority of people do not have a stable internet connection through no fault of their own.

TalkTalk is one of the largest UK ISPs, and I count myself amongst their customers.

My net is routinely down for a few minutes, at random times, most days. On bad days it can stay down for hours.

If that's standard service, there are a lot of people who won't get on well with this DRM, at least the versions that boot you out as soon as you lose it.

On ME2 you need a connection when the game loads up to load a saved game but once it's loaded you can continue playing and load any other save games without being connected to the internet.

any reason you're with talktalk, my most disliked ISP?

Well I live in a house with my fiancée and our 50mb line is always connected and always on.

If the real world is a house share with four other students, you can keep it. ;)

If piracy is so bad on the PC why are the games so much cheaper than the console versions?

Not owning a console myself is piracy a problem with them ? The reason I ask is that I see massive lists of the latest pirated games for consoles yet it would appear everyone makes it out to be a PC only problem ?

PS3 is piracy free, 360 is pretty terrible, Wii is pretty terrible (I think), PSP is a gone, DS is gone. PC is pretty much gone.

you would think they would just make PS3 games if piracy was an issue. The issue with the PC is the market size is about 1/10th of the console market

I have a 14 hour flight in a couple of months and the seats have a built in power socket. At this rate I ain't gonna be able to play anything on my lappy. :-(
