Why would ANYONE recommend an Escort? (RS Cosworth excepted).

Becuase its CHEAP to run, CHEAP to insure and CHEAP to buy.

Cheap being the key word here.

The lad is 17, anything remotely sporty, flashy, above average will give the insurers a field day with him.

Theres a good chance of him pranging it(not saying OP is a bad driver but its stastically likely he will) and there are more than enough escorts in scrappies to salvage bits from.

Buy a cheap car, save some money, build up NCB, THEN buy something nicer

He has up to £2k to spend and explicitly asked for something that doesn't look like it belongs in a scrappers. Which a cheap Mk4/5 escort certainly would. They were godawful when they were new, and time hasn't been kind.

Yes there are Escorts worth owning, but none of them can be had "cheap".
