First Decent Car

So tell me, flying in the face of independent reviews, why is the astra "quite poor"?

Poor build quality, average reliability, they do not seem to standing the test of time very well at all, the interior is pretty terrible, its just... some generic car. Great. Typical Vauxhall. The only good Vauxhall to come out of the 90's was the Omega.

I take it you drive a Vauxhall Astra?

Poor build quality? How did you come to that conclusion? It's no worse than your average Mondeo, nor is it's looks.

I'll agree on the interior but I'm not the sort of person who get's a wilt-on when their leather get's creased.

And no, I don't drive an Astra, though I've had a few as hire cars before.

By getting into a Mk4 Astra and thinking 'Wow, this is poor'?

I can't think of a reason to waste time and effort on Astras when there are so many better cars out there for his budget. If he just wants a hassle free 'it will work I dont care' hatchback the Corolla is better. If he wants something that drives well a Focus is better. If he wants something that drives reasonably well and is reliable then a Honda Civic is better.

Why waste your time on sub-par stuff when it just isn't neccesary?

Because it's only sub-par in your opinion which appears to be based on limited experience? *shrug*

If you think I am the only person who thinks the Vauxhall Astra is not a shining beacon of awesomeness in a sea of hatchbacks then you are very much mistaken.

Yet I can find plenty of people who think for the price, it is, people who don't base their opinions of cars on "sitting in one".

I've sat in a mates Astra mk4 a few times, and even I, the last person to complain about the interior, didn't like it, it felt very old inside, was cramped, and the seats didn't feel right ( then again, I'm used to leather). I am in no way used to a great interior ( 96 volvo and 02 citroen) but the mk4 astra really felt so dated and rubbish inside.

It was however, nice and silent ( the 1.6 engine inaudible at the lights idling) and it wasn't bad at cornering, I was surprised how fast you could go in it through a corner without understeering.

Don't get me wrong I don't like a Focus either but it still looks ( inside and outside) nicer and it felt nicer than an Astra.

This is all subjective though of course.

I'll be the first to admit that nearly all Vauxhall interiors are crap, seen far worse though, Peugeot for example.
