There are benefits to going 5870 xfire, shader intensive games will run faster with 5870's due to the higher shader count, higher default clocks, better cooling and higher quality VRM's.

my 5970 would go over 970/1250 on stock cooling that took the temp upto 92c

Right these are on the same rig. Dont look at the CPU score just the GPU.

Single 5870 Oc 970/1310 stock cooling

Single 5970 Oc and running chilled water you cant get these clocks on a stock cooler!! 1000/1201
So remember take about 1000/1500 ponits from the GPU score.

Single 5870 GPU score looks a bit low, I score over 21k GPU @ 1000, mind you latest drivers bumps vantage up by over 1000k.

i would have thought that 2x 5870 might be slightly better than a 5970 though.

The HD5870's are clocked higher and in the right board will have have 2x16x express slots while the HD5970 it's bascailly two cards sharing one slot.

Ye that was mths ago with the old drivers. The 59 was yesterday.

Forget 2x5870 ...

Go for a 5970 (cheaper than 2x5870) and add in another or a 5870 a bit later if you is really feeling the need ... and run em all @ 900/1250 for some nice not too noisy action! I can get mine to 950/1250 for 24/7 use with stock cooler but it's a wee bit loud.
