Fermi NDA end time & on sale UK time

...and VAT on top of that. £452ish

That price is equivalent to suicide to nvidia. For a marginal increase in performance (if any) over 5870 the price difference is just unjustified. The have to make 480 cost around 350, otherwise they are not gonna sell.

The'll sell all that they can produce at almost any price. Mainly because they can't produce very many and there are people that refuse to buy ATi, because the company killed their sister or something :)

Not true, not on components such as these, the mark up is next to nothing.

I'd have to disagree - at some point in the chain somebody is making a massive mark-up because compared to the conversion from a price given by an American retailer+VAT often our price is much higher. This is especially true when the cards are short of stock, because then the retailers don't even have to worry about competing with the prices of competitors, people then just buy the cards simply because they have them in stock. For example OcUK managed to shift an Asus Mars GTX295 for £999, somebody bought it just because it was one of the hardest to get hold of cards at the time.

you know whats going to hurt my bank? The fact that i will be drunk when the NDA is released and probably read
Crysis benchmark
GTX 295 - 50fps
GTX 480 - 49fps

as
gtx 480 - 50000000fps
gtx295 - 3 fps

and the price as £FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE WOOOOO BUY ME NOW!!

and end up with a £1380 hole in my bank balance.

edit: and teh ocuk dons actually coming to laugh at me, since that was just a box i bought, not the card.

You're going to replace 2 cards with a single card that will perform worse and probably cost more?

This is the reason people make fun of nVidia fans.

I,m not a fanboy its called a choice and i prefer Nvidia..no differant to you picking a certain tv brand or cloths its Called a choice.

Margins vary by the distributor and manufacturer.
Trust me its not the resellers that are making a massive "mark-up".

Take the XFX ATI Radeon HD 5870 XXX as an example - I would wager that OcUK are making a 10-11% margin on that particular model which makes them roughly £30 per unit sold.

That's kinda the definition of one.

It's not really much of a choice if you're only going to buy one brand now is it.

As was said though, fanboys generally buy something at their own detriment, they could have had a similar product that's cheaper and performs better but doesn't have their beloved brand's logo on it.

People buy TVs based on specs, there are choices and there are informed choices.

people?

people dont do anything of the sort.informed people will buy on price and spec, others will buy on the name. if you think every Tom, Dick and Harry buy tv's based on spec.......lol

It won't be inferior in all areas, a single GTX480 will have no dual GPU issues and will consume less power under load.

I understand why someone might want a single GTX480 over 5850x2, I don't understand why you would want a 480 over a 5870 assuming it is +10% performance and +50% price.

I think the point is, regardless of brand identity, look at performance figures.
It's just a waste of money for less performance.

People should pick brands by performance/quality. Not by marketing crap with a few logo's.
