Got a colleague at work, who's now been off work for over a month now. He says he's suffering from stress but reading his twitter feed, he's just working on his own personal projects at home.

Imo this is no different from benefit fraud. It's really gets on my nerves, that he's playing the system.

Rant over.

Is he supposedly stressed over anything in particular?

edit: also what is he supposed to do at home, just sit crying in a corner eating his own faeces?

I hate people like this, one of my old mates, his whole family were like this, used to fake illnesses, back problems etc, and he spent 2-3 months on the sick, they found he was working as a mobile tattooist as thats what he likes to do on the side. he got sacked thr following week.

You've never suffered from stress then? Or maybe you're a qualified doctor ...

Stress is a common illness amongst the workshy as it is easy to claim and impossible to tell if they are making it up or not.

Whilst I was at Tesco the amount of working class retards who claimed stress or depression and had weeks on end of was laughable, but that is the working attitute of modern Britain.

Working on his own projects at home could be helping him with his stress.

Stress/Depression doesn't mean your life stops dead and you lie in bed all day.

Maybe he is stressed, and working on his personal projects to overcome it. What help is going home, doing sweet FA all day everyday going to do? It's only going to remind you of stressful times. Why not do something to pass the time.

I have a friend on the sick, Suffers from a nervous disposition and stress. He plays guitar, Cuts grass and helps people around their homes for cash.

Thing is, When he comes visiting its so obvious he's genuine. He's so overly apologetic, So easily upset and worried he's offended you, And thats when he's talking to me a good friend. He'll sometimes say he's coming to visit me, and when he doesnt turn up, he then darent turn up for weeks as he feels he's let me down and is scared to come back and talk to me.

Again, This guy is happy to work on projects at home, he's happy to help people out with their gardens and with other tasks they need. But it's obvious that he's got deep seeded issues that keep him out of work.

I know a slacker when I see one. He's never completed a project in his life. He use to brag about how he avoid doing any work in his previous job.

For the past year I had the misfortune to work with him. When he had a deadline approaching to delivery a project he would conveniently become ill, its become a running joke.

Brother did medicine at Camebridge and he fully agrees with me.
Are you a doctor? I didn't think so.

I didn't claim to be a doctor, i have worked with people that have stress/depression and they are fully encouraged to go about their lives as normal as possible and take up hobbies.

There will always be people who try to cheat the system by whatever means they can, we have no proof that this person is cheating the system or not.

This kind of changes things :)

What the hell has that got to do with anything?

If your brother is a Doctor and is willing to say he knows if there is something wrong or not, without even knowing who he is, or what his problems are; Is a Doctor that is really in the wrong job.

Yes, stress is used a lot by people who just want some time off, but it can ALSO be a genuine cause to be off. Until you know better, the OP's colleague is the latter.
