Hey all,
So it's my birthday soon and I think a new build is in order!

I'm really looking for stability so I was wondering if anyone here could offer some feedback on the following build?

I've got a 5.1 Headset but I know the board comes with some sort of sound card thing... But I have heard such good things about that card.

I currently own
GTX 285 OC
Case
Megahalems Cooler thing :D
cd driver etc

Guess the only thing left (should everything else check out) is the PSU
I am planning to overclock. I think 4GHz is an acceptable frequency to aim for.

I had this in mind - Clicky :)

Anyway cheers for taking the time to help me out here.:)

Its a fine looking spec.

The psu you linked might be a bit overkill.

A 750w or 850w one from corsair or antec will be enough for with a future faster or dual graphics card.

I would probably go for the i5 750 which is a quad core for the same price.

PSU is way over the top. 600w will be plenty.

Yes this is something, what is the deal with the Quad i5 and the duals?
From what i read the duals seem to be pretty good at games but the quad was better at memory read and writes... *confused!*
Would the quad be better as im going with the 2000MHz ram?

I have run crossfire ATI 1900X & running 5850 crossfire and not had or noticed micro-stutter.

If you do plan for SLI then 750w will be fine.

more and more games are starting to take advantage of the third and fourth core. Most of the benchmarks I've seen put the 750 ahead in the majority of tests (anandtech bench scores comparison here) including games. Plus by all accounts it overclocks very well with good cooling (which you have :) )

It seems like a better option to me

The i5 750 is the best of all the i5 range.

The i5 660 you have selected is a dual core with a GPU built in. You won't be able to use that GPU because you're on a P55 board not an H55 or H57 board and you've got as you say a GTX 285 which would beat it senseless. But you're still paying for that GPU you can't and won't use.

The i5 750 is a quad core which is available in a less expensive form (you can buy it without a retail fan unlike the 660), has a better memory controller and can if you want overclock to the same speed as the i5 660 without raising the voltage at all.

Not logical to buy the dual core here.

i agree well put

I like it!
However, why the stupidly expensive mobo? That's just a ridiculous price!
I'd recommend http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-203-GI and save yourself £70 or put it towards some more RAM. Also, with the HDD's are you planning on running RAID? If not just go for the 1TB F3

Yeah i was planning to go raid 0, or use that speeding HDD that the board has built in.

Also I chose the asus board cause I want one :D
I have always wanted one yet always get something else - 1st MSI then Foxconnblackops.
Also from what I read the asus boards do quite well in benchmarks no?

This I did not know, thanks for putting it so well! :)

Oh yes, that board is a top quallity board no doubt about it! And yes it does beat the rest in benchmarks (even if it is by 1%, a minimal amount which will make no difference). But for the majority of users I feel it too overpriced for what it is, especially as you probably wont use half of the features. Still it's your choice, if you like something and can afford it. Go for it :)

lol I'll push it to it's limits for about a month of hard overclocking then settle with 4GHz ^^
I do own a blackops so I hope I can make the best use of it. Give me memory timings!!
Too bad my poor cellshock will be going on eBay :(

Ok here is is.

A tad more expensive but I think in raid those SSd's would be so sick.

Only worry is what to do with page file, Temp files and photoshop scratch disk.
Would popping them onto my current samsung HDD be ok?

^
blimey! Do it!

Not sure you need the artic paste, unless you got some heatsink you not mentioned.

Dont get those ssd's you will be much better off getting a good 80gb drive such as the Intel x-25m...the value ones are good but the x-25m are quality.......Well i think im right in saying that as long as you use 'TRIM' then you wont have any problems.....

+1 that's a winner for me too

Re: page file I think the consensus is to leave it on the SSD (there's a thread in the storage forum that discusses it). Not sure about the photoshop files

Serious? Humm I better look into this - I'd hate to have £200 wasted :o
I think I could set the 750HDD as a scratch disk for photoshop though over the ssd

PS. lol at your Sig XD
