The Pacific War was really a massive combined arms offensive, there was a much bigger naval presence than in Europe - the only 5 aircraft carrier battles ever, plus arguably the biggest naval battle ever occurred there. If you concentrate solely on the Army and Marines you miss out on two other dimensions.
For example, on Guadalcanal, ultimately the US won there because the Army/Marines held Henderson Field, so the Cactus Air Force could control the skies around the island, so the Navy could control the sea and get supplies and reinforcements in and the Japanese couldn't.
Two of the biggest Japanese bases in the Pacific, Rabaul and Truk ("Gibraltar of the Pacific"!) were neutralised purely by carrier based air, which gives you an idea how important the naval air service was.
Yeah thats probably another reason why I generally prefer the European theatre, land warfare is much more appealing to me than naval warfare. I do think its wonderful (not really the right word I guess, but you get what I mean) that we have two theatres within one war with so much variety and at times almost opposite foci.
