The Pacific **NEW TRAILER**

The Pacific War was really a massive combined arms offensive, there was a much bigger naval presence than in Europe - the only 5 aircraft carrier battles ever, plus arguably the biggest naval battle ever occurred there. If you concentrate solely on the Army and Marines you miss out on two other dimensions.

For example, on Guadalcanal, ultimately the US won there because the Army/Marines held Henderson Field, so the Cactus Air Force could control the skies around the island, so the Navy could control the sea and get supplies and reinforcements in and the Japanese couldn't.

Two of the biggest Japanese bases in the Pacific, Rabaul and Truk ("Gibraltar of the Pacific"!) were neutralised purely by carrier based air, which gives you an idea how important the naval air service was.

Yeah thats probably another reason why I generally prefer the European theatre, land warfare is much more appealing to me than naval warfare. I do think its wonderful (not really the right word I guess, but you get what I mean) that we have two theatres within one war with so much variety and at times almost opposite foci.

Conditions on the naval vessels in the Pacific also must not be forgotten. The temperatures below decks on most naval vessels were absolutely stifling! Couple that with having to work in the engine room, knowing that if you get hit, you really have little chance of survival. While the ETO was an all out explosive, metal against metal slogging match, the war in the pacific was more pschological in my opinion, 50% of the war was fought against the elements and with yourself.

The jungles conditions, the weather, the conditions aboard ships, the suicidal nature of the Japanese, fighting to the death, make no mistake, the war in the pacific was just as 'interesting' as in Europe, just not as 'important' (i.e. the capture of the Phillipines or Peleliu was not really strategically important in winning the war).

Shall be buying this on blu-ray (but not for anything more than about £40) as IMO, even with a 'it's not the same style as band of brothers' hat on, it just doesn't have them same continuity or bonds between people as BoB did and I got BoB on DVD way back (and on blu-ray for £10 cheaper).

I rate BoB as the best thing ever recorded but the pacific is "hmmm".

I look forward to the discussion on it once Sky has aired it, but as I don't have sky and won't ever be getting it plus the fact I'll be buying it anyway I think its fine if I get it by other means :p

Some peoples ideas on the legality of defrauding companies is funny, why not just accept you are doing something wrong instead of trying to justify it?

OR ...what you could do is simply be patient (wow ! I know..actually having to wait for something, how on earth did we ever cope before the internet :D ) and buy it when you planned on buying it. Or does it really matter all that much if someone has seen it and you havent? Is peer pressure really that much of a dominant factor in someones life, or is it down to an I want , I want , gimme gimme attitude, or is it really just down to a lack of patience. Has to be one of those 3 I would think otherwise a person would be happy to simply wait.

Edit: Actually, post deleted, it's been debated over and over and this isn't the thread for it.

Suffice to say I disagree with you. :)

@ Tombstone. It's more that it's basically on demand. If I have a spare hour then there it is...

But surely when you get it on Bluray it would still be on demand? (assuming nobody is holding the bluray in a safe :D ) So again it must come down to one of the 3 reasons I posted earlier , as they are the only explanations I can see for why it must be had asap by any means.

True but that doesn't help when I have a spare hour now :D

I've not seen any of Pacific yet I'll be waiting patiently until the DVD/Blu-Ray release but my biggest concern since I first heard of it was that it would suffer in compariosn to Band of Brothers purely because the story is based on a couple of books so has had to be made up to a certain ectent as opposed to BoB which stuck largely to the single true story making it inherently more believable.

The huge hype for the Pacific really hasn't helped either everyone has been building up for years now ad expecting this major motion picture moment that would smash BoB out of this world so sadly it could only ever disapoint. Hopefully by waiting for it and going in with lower expectations I will enjoy it all the more.

i just watched episode 3 and its good, but not as good as BoB for me so far

<Spoilers ya watched E2 my problem with it... its just a lot of talking and then manning the 0.30 cals or whatever machine guns they are toting. plus a bit of mortar/arty fire....Spoilers>

its this one dimensional side to the combat/battle that i dont enjoy so much.

SPR or BoB was better because they had to STORM the MG, not simply defend it. but there was a threat of tanks, or para elite, like the Fallsj dropping in.

Sadly, the Pacific doesnt seem to have this.

sorry i meant that is my problem with E1 and E2 like i said before i saw the programmes.

the theater is just IMO a bit boring.

i have seen the first 2 eps and whilst i agree its not as good as BoB it is certainly a good series...
i wouldnt say the theater was boring though, the japanese were nutcases that for one is an interesting point in itself, i was trying to explain to my girlfriend (who completely knows nothing about war) what they were like and their mindset. something which the pacific does show very well.

i loved in ep1 (i think its ep1) where the jap ships turned up and i said to her about the jap navy and what would happen and it was good to see this was reflected well in the episode (i wont go into detail as it would be a spolier of sorts)

if any one is interested there is a podcast for the pacific on itunes with interviews and all sorts with making of's chucked in there 24 clips ranging in size worth a watch

but why does it never show how shell shocked the rest of the japanese army is after seeing their comrades run headlong to their death?

seems very 1 sided like the US just suffer continual horrors, im sure the japanese fighters werent all from jails and insane asylums. and that they didnt exactly enjoy charging 0.30's all day long? what conditions did they live in whilst preparing for the US invaders?!

No films (to my knowledge) have ever really covered this?

There was a scene in the 1st episode that shows you the Japanese army are just as sane as the US.....

Don't want to pin point it out, it's only small and brings home how far away from home everyone was

thats what i mean, i know this is for a US audience but it just seems like a part of Medal of Honour or something where bad guys just keep spawning from the same room.

they dont seem come from anywhere, they dont do anything other than run into your guns, they dont go anywhere afterwards.

just struck me as odd that you have so much emotional display from one group, but the others remain almost faceless.
