***Nvidia GTX480 & 470 reviews & discussion***

Haha, no, I dont work for nividia, im just applying a bit of common sense to the situation. This is virgin, undeveloped tech, dont forget, and its quite obvious the competition is rattled (see the last 20 pages).

It's not really common sense as such, no one is arguing the merits of GPGPU technology (no one who knows what they're on about at least), but CPUs as they are simply aren't good enough to do the tasks handled by GPGPUs.

That's the purpose of them, it's not really a CPU replacement, it's a compliment if anything, it's just nVidia are using marketing to try and tell people that the CPU isn't important in the hope that they buy a new nVidia graphics card instead of upgrading their CPU.

As for "virgin undeveloped tech", again it's simply untrue.

This has been in development for a very very long time, they've been tweaking it for nearly a year already, drivers too, they've simply been having hardware problems where they couldn't viably produce the cards.

Yea, im not taking it personally, since it is freaking stupid tbh. Im pretty lucky that I can do it. Being single = lots of monies for myself, which tbh im loving it atm, had holiday at begining of march, gotone at end of april, bought 3 new cards, and buying a htpc. now, that is not my normal spending habbits, and i had saved for a good 6 months (I save at least £300 a month normally, more if i make any extra from overtime or trading). IF I were to go out and get myself a new GF, i doubt I would be able to afford any of this lol, and WIFE....Im only 24!

Now, someone go and post in my media center build thread to advise me on my FIRST EVER ATI card!

Hey, FRIEND, I've been looking at a pair of 5850s *nudge nudge*. :p :o

well i know someone who used to be a fanboi now has the up most hate for Nvidia, jezz what a turn

I spent my friend fund last year on taking a friend to barbados in november. I spent the next lot on taking my mate to iceland for 10 days, in which I spent 600% over budgget due to a strip club, twice....So my friend fund is a little low. Come help me run a lan, for 4 days, and ill buy you one as payment? Who knows, could even become business partners :)

A LAN even you say? Always been curious about them...

If you would join me, you'd realise "ironic" is one of the most misused and least understood words going.

Ok I will humour you:

Ironic: Poignantly contrary to what was expected or intended: madness, an ironic fate for such a clear thinker.

The irony is that Intel/AMD pretty much made Nvidia do this by trying to squeeze them out.

Are we done yet?;)

It's still not ironic, nVidia's fermi cards aren't EVER going to compete with a CPU.

There is no threat to AMD/Intel business because a solid system needs both a solid GPU and a solid CPU and nVidia have been denied from making an x86/64 CPU.

As I've said, GPGPU is for things CPUs simply aren't capable of doing because of how they're designed, what do you think gave Intel the idea for Larabee?

It's like (hypothetical situation) M-Audio owning the ASIO license, and trying to squeeze ATi out of the market by denying them usage of ASIO on their cards, when M-Audio's primary business is ASIO Professional music production audio hardware and then saying it's ironic that ATi are now including HDMI audio with their cards.

It's audio, yeah, but HDMI audio is utterly useless when it comes to ASIO audio cards and music production, they're similar fields (audio) but they don't cross over.

Looks to me like Nvidia have made a mistake and rushed out these 480 series.
More research and testing needed me thinks.High poer draw loud , so need after market fan or waterblock another £150 on top of £450 for one card. That's a big swallow.
Unless a really updated revised 480 card comes out around September 2010 etc I won't spend nearly £450 on one. and £100 to £150 for a full waterblock(Even if I could afford one).
Nvidia should save their manufacturing cash and scrap these and spend a year to make a real next gen card for 2011. And resign themselves that 2010 is ATI's year.

If in doubt, take it out of context

Things simply don't work like that, nVidia NEEDED to get something out, even if it's simply for PR or pride reasons, and we all know how "proud" and arrogant nVidia are as a company.

Don't forget that GPUs are nVidia's sorce of income, they have no new GPUs out, where are they getting their income from?

They simply couldn't afford to keep out of the market for over a year for many different reasons, 7 months+ is bad enough, their reputation, market share and share price have all plummeted.

Yes KyleW, a LAN :) I have run a few small ones, even got BBC coverage of one lol. I have most of the kit, just have to keep buying network cables as i keep increasing the size lol.

I know you werent, I was just saying a little more about it :)

Rypt, its in the south west, there are loads of small (50 person) LANs that run around here. notice how i did say small ones, not ones like the 500 person ones that happen in bristol, or the 1500 ones in newbury, or the 2k ones in stoneleigh. Although not enough people are going to warrant anyone foing 2k ones in th ecurrent economic climate,
