New 2010 iPhone Rumours

I still don't see any real competition to the iPhone though. There are still many phones being released that are described as "iPhone killers" but I've played with a few and I don't think they come close.

My brother-in-law currently works for Nokia (over the past few years he's been with Motorola and SE) and he doesn't think there's anything about which competes with the iPhone, certainly not on a usability front.

I'm looking forward to a new iPhone this year, I don't know whether it'll be a massive forward step from what we've currently got but I'm comfortably out of contract so I'll probably do what I did last year, sell the one I have now and buy a new one on PAYG and just transfer my SIM over.

Odd - having used the iPhone and a multitude of Android phones, I will never go back to using another Apple phone. It's fine if you want a fashion device but from a design and usability perspective they've got themselves into a corner. Where do you go from there? The phone has not changed fundamentally since it was released. Same UI, same functionality and same ridiculous over controlling management of user experience. Why can't I put my on wallpaper on it? How is that going to harm my user experience? Why can't I run at least 2-3 apps at the same time? If you can't give us full multitasking then at least let us have things like GPS and e-mail running at the same time as other apps.

It's just an average bit of kit dressed up to be basically usable for the average joe bloggs. Kudos for the simplicity but some of us want more and, for me at least, the Android phones deliver in spades. Slick hardware, slick UI and a far more integrated user experience. IMO the Android devices are vastly closer to a really decent multi role device than the iPhone is or ever has been. These other phones aren't iPhone killers because they aren't trying to be an iPhone - they are by default so much more - but only if you want it - the iPhone is successful because it fulfils the need of the average person perfectly. It looks good, it feels good, it plays games (so it entertains), it has maps and it has internet. It does all of these things singularly well and stylishly.

For me that's not enough and I personally suspect that Jobs & Co are seeing that some their more opinionated and vocal customers are starting to view the singular functionality as being limiting - I think the 4G will be a move toward that - whether it will be soon enough to quash the rapid growth of Android devices leaves to be seen.

Apple also is having to deal with another couple of things at the moment that are damaging to their image. The first is Mr Jobs himself - he's a genius but his personal PR is diabolical. The second is what we call at home (NZ) 'Tall Poppy Syndrome'. Apple has gotten big and fast - added to this they have been image wise very successful - unfortunately like Microsoft people tend to get wary of this and once they reach a critical mass people start to shoot them down. The combination of this and Mr Jobs very public hissy fits means that Apple have to produce some revolutionary stuff soon, and the iPad wasn't it. I hope the 4G is because they need it.

In fairness Steve has been throwing hissy fits since he first got in to the game, not sure what you mean by his personal PR being diabolical.

You barely hear of his personal life, except when he's ill.

Apple has grown quickly, but that's because of the market share they currently hold (~4% worldwide) so they can only grow. The rate at which they've grown is a direct correlation between product releases, and yes, I agree the iPad needs to be something special but to say the people will shoot them down if it flops is only because of past expectation. They are bound to hit a stumbling block.

If your happy with an Android phone, good. There are needs for everyone, but your comments are more likely to start an argument that win any fans in here mate :)

Keep in mind there’s a big difference between “is” and “appears to be”. And they have no actual details of the next-generation iPhone. Nothing. Not the A4-family CPU system-on-a-chip. Not the 960 × 640 double-resolution display. Not the second front-facing camera. Not even the third-party multitasking in iPhone OS 4. All they have is that there’s going to be a new iPhone this summer, period. Thanks for the scoop, Yukari Iwatani Kane.

According to MacRumors, he has an excellent track record.

Perhaps it's just a personal observation but he seems to do quite a good job at offending people and/or building a bad name for himself especially when it comes to dealing with the IT media and his own staff. I guess when you bring in as much money for investors as he does he can do no wrong. I think this current spat with HTC (and by proxy Google) is not really doing him any favors - more so because I think the next gen of iPhones won't be the massive step they would've been before the likes of the Bravo and Nexus One came onto the market. If Apple is not careful they will just look like they're on the catch up.

Don't get me wrong - for what it is that iPhone is a brilliant device but in my eyes at least it has not attempted to move beyond what it is. When it was first released it was a revolution not only as a form factor but as a user experience. Since 2007 it has not changed other than to bring it up to speed with what it was expected to be on release.

I totally understand what you're saying, but I believe Apple will do big things with OS 4.0. If they don't I'll be disappointed.

I have been selling phones for 12 years now and I have next to me a Palm Pre, HTC Touch HD2, Hero, and Iphone. My sim is always in my iphone. I keep trying the other phones but they just dont measure up.

I had an iphone for over a year but then it broke, decided to go with the HTC magic and haven't looked back since. Dunno why but I just prefer it :)

OS4.0 is where it's at, not just for the iPhone but for the iPad too. A lot of the flaws in the latter device will hopefully be addressed there and then making the user experience that little bit better. Lack of USB still peeve's me off though.

As for the next iPhone. I cba going through the usual rumours/spec rumours yet again. It's the same bs every year tbh. At the end of the day I just hope the sod has good battery life because imo that is a key issue, especially with multitasking on the horizon.

My 3G is already reaching the end of it's battery life, and given that the thing has multitasked for ages, and has a custom home screen the device really does get pushed to it's limits.

From Engadget "Gruber says the next model will have an A4-class SoC, a 960 x 640 display, a front-facing camera, and that iPhone OS 4.0 will enable third-party multitasking."

So its basically higher resolution and they have been so kind as to unlock multi tasking in their already multi tasking capable OS.
No idea what an "A4-class SoC" is though :o

The same as the ipad processor.

It's the name for the chip (A4) they've put in the iPad.

SoC - System on a Chip

I'll be getting one pretty much no matter what. Purely on the basis that they can't make it any worse than the 3G and if I have to use this slow POS for much longer it's taking a long walk (lob) off a short pier. It's just too close for me to justify buying a 3GS.

Personally I don't believe anything I see until it's announced by Apple. I just can't get excited by the stream of rumours any more (not that I really did anyway).
