Have they updated the Phantom Menace and implemented the new CGI Yoda yet? I didn't much like the new puppet they built. :o

Anal I know but out of the Star Wars prequels, the only one I've not yet bought on DVD is The Phantom Menace, partly because I've got the VHS version but also because it's my least favourite and I've never really bothered.

However, to complete the collection and have a nice row on my bookcase, I thought I'd pick it up, being so cheap these days....

Nope no CGI yoda in the TPM dvd.

However the CGI yoda was featured as a teaser I think on one of the Star Wars DVDs as a possible upgrade over the puppet yoda in TPM in the future - which I assume will be in the blu-ray/3D release whenever that is.

A lot of die hard Star Wars fans prefer the VHS/Laserdisc version over the DVD because the DVD is not the theatrical version shown back in theatres and it also has an annoying pink colour filter over a lot of scenes - a bit like what Mr Lucas did with ESB on DVD with the blue colour filter over nearly everything!

Hope this helps.

That does help, much appreciated :) I knew they were planning the CGI version, I just wasn't sure if it had been stuck into the movie yet.

Despite those downfalls, I think I'd like to have a DVD version anyway. I just don't have a decent enough cassette player to watch my old VHS on :( The quality is rather pap.

Despite its flaws there are some cool scenes in the Phantom Menace. Seeing the Jedi use their force powers so easily for the first time was also very cool. (Compared to the force powers you see in Eps 4/5/6). Makes me want to play Knights of the Old Republic again :D

Yeah, I gotta agree. Whilst the films were poop overall, the Jedi combat and powers made an 11-year old me a very happy bunny.

Isn't the Jedi duel at the end of Ep 1 rated as one of the best live action duels?

I agree though, I must've been 10-11 when it first came out, my jaw hit the floor seeing proper lightsabre fights, droid armies and those awesome tanks.

The Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul fight duel definately is a classic. Just the sheer speed and choreography of it all and portraying Jedi and Sith in their heydays. Force power usage was as simple as moving your own arms and feet.

Pod Race was awesome too. (So was the game actually, dang wanna play it again)

The SEGA arcade game even though it was only 4 courses I felt was far superior to the actual official game itself. The Tatooine stage was more accurate to the movie and of course there was the replicated control system. A big up to their Trilogy Arcade game as well.

As mentioned Episode 1 has great action scenes, the Pod Race and the lightsabre fights are very accomplished.

I just wish Lucas had never directed it and he should have cast a different actor for Anakin.

I was hoping a for a new version of TPM where Jar Jar Binks takes a tactical nuclear warhead to the face which would let me watch past the first scene he's in.

I agree TPM has some strong points and some better than the other two prequels (being shot on 35mm film, lightsaber fight at the end, Liam Neeson, Pod race, Darth Maul) but it's just a shame that Lucas opted for trying to make the film more appealing to little kids with silly characters like Jar Jar and going a bit crazy with the CGI (which still wasn't much better than other movies at the time). Still, I do prefer it to the cringe fest that is AOTC. :o

I wish they'd release another box set with all 6 movies, taking into consideration all the crappy parts....Binks, Yoda puppet etc. I'm surprised Lucas hasn't milked it already.

This, Jar Jar Binks and C3POs cheesiness were the movies worst points.

Episode 2 was better, I liked how it got darker leading up to Episode 3. Clone battles, Yoda fighting, much better cinema memories for me :)

Nowadays I tend to think that the Star Wars prequels were destined to be the way they are. The problem is they are basically comprised of a lot of the worst elements of the original trilogy.

The franchise was already running out of ideas by the time Return of the Jedi came out. Teddy bears, a second Death Star, puppets galore, different colored lightsabres, etc. and all of that ended up in the new films multiplied by 100 with nothing else to compensate.

I think there is space for more films in the future though, but only in terms of a Star Trek 11 or Tron Legacy stylistic reinvention. Just keep Lucas away from it, completely dissociate said future films from much of what's gone on before and take more risks with the visual style.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

They probably should be left as is, two bad films out of six isn't exactly a bad record and I definitely feel there's no need for a re-invention though I do agree there is room for more films so long as Lucas isn't involved.

This is why I feel the new live action TV show may actually be good as it will essentially be fan fiction based around some of the lesser characters. They're still probably making a mistake setting it between The Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, instead of maybe setting it during the early days of the Old Republic, but it still sounds as if it could be good.

With regards to Phantom Menace I was nearly in tears leaving the cinema afterwards especially since we'd gone so far to see it on the opening night so I really couldn't care less what plans they have for it. I would imagine there will be a similar Special Edition re-release either in 2017 for the fortieth anniversary and there's also a rumour of a 3D re-release (which I really hope is true, it would be great to see Star Wars in a cinema again :D)

Same can be said for Indy 4 and the newly rumoured Indy 5 that is on the way - I hope Lucas has less involvement but I see that highly unlikely as it is his story/creation. :(

I must have been one of the few who actually like Indy 4 even if the end was horrendously over cooked.

It's nice to finally see a thread where the prequels aren't being shredded for once. :)

I have to say I would love to see a new trilogy based on the New Jedi Order series. When Luke becomes powerful and the reintroduction of the Jedi into the Republic. The books are fantastic. But, as said, keep Lucas away from them. I think Spielberg rumoured he wanted to do them some time ago, but I haven't heard anything lately. Bring back Irvin Kershner. :D

Doesn't anyone think, while a great watch, the light sabre battle between Maul and Obi looks "too" choreographed?

You must be the only person in the world who liked it, it was pretty much a snooze fest .......... then there were aliens. Possibly the worst movie I've ever endured at the cinema and a total slap in the face to the Indy legacy, it even made the Star Wars prequels complete with Jar Jar look good.

Basically Lucas should never direct again and should step back from creative control, he should oversee things rather than do them which would definately result in better movies.
