Uma Thurman's New Film Smashes Box Office Records

Commercial failure? I'd say that's yet to be judged in the UK, but I reckon the cost of putting on a weekend of showings at a single cinema will vanish into the profit from DVD sales as a result of this publicity. Not to say they'll make back the £3m/$5m it's said to have cost, but they obviously weren't even trying to make it a cinema success, otherwise they would have a) marketed it at all, b) put it on at more than one cinema

If they can recoup their entire loss via DVD sales I'll enter the film industry myself. Why would bad publicity make anyone want to run out and buy a movie that everyone says isn't worth watching, let alone buying? That doesn't make any sense.

"Here guys, buy this product! It's awful!"

Plenty of big blockbusters (admittedly that's quite a difference) that fail at the cinemas recoup their loses from DVD sales, TV rights etc. over time. Waterworld made it's money back eventually.

If you can get publicity from the lowest grossing film ever made, then you have a shot, especially if the budget on it wasn't too high in the first place.

The majority of the publicity for it hasn't been about it being bad, it's been about it breaking a record for lowest grossing opening weekend. Which is enough to stick the film in peoples minds. Yeah sure the reviews are terrible, but that doesn't normally hinder a big film. If they'd wanted to they could have made it have a mediocre first week. The past month has seen loads of films practically taken off the schedule after the first week because it's so busy at the moment, and that's good films!

I dunno about anyone else but the bad press about how bad its flopped has me intrigued!

I may just buy the DVD when its £3 to see just how bad it was lol.

Exactly what I thought when this hit BBC news at 8:00am the other day. Couldn't help feeling that they have now ruined this films chances, as everyone will be rushing to see it.

But it's not going to be in cinemas, it was only in one cinema for one weekend. So they'll rake it in from dvd sales

I disagree, Batman and Robin wasn't bad. Wait a minute, no! It really was. Surely the film can't be that bad. Its got Goose in it!
This is going to really annoy me if I don't ask, but who is Goose? :p

I've sort of assumed you mean Iceman, but he was in Batman: Forever. I need clarification before my head explodes. :D

I just liked her in dangerous liaisons, she had a nice pair.

Pause/rewind/play/pause/rewind/play

Anthony Edwards aka Goose is in Motherhood along with Ms Thurman.

This film has done impressively badly at the box office but it wouldn't be entirely surprising if they manage to recoup a fair proportion of their costs on DVD sales/rentals as people want to see exactly how awful it is.

Are you saying that this film was only ever going to have a weekend showing in only one cinema?
If that is the case then it's a complete non story and everybody is jumping on a bandwagon without knowing the facts.

I wouldnt say only ever, but it was only released in that one cinema for the one weekend. I think there's more to it having done so badly than they've just done a rubbish job, I'll be amazed if they weren't aiming for the title of lowest grossing opening weekend.

Haha I went to the cinema to see the film here in Beijing as it was the only English language film showing. Didn't think the film was that terrible, wasn't great by any stretch of the imagination. Although having said that there was only me and my friend in the whole cinema! :D

edit/ oop, thinking of the wrong film (typed out my reply whilst waiting for the page to load, slow t'interweb here) - I went to see the film Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Had Sean Bean in it though, legend :p
