I had a 205GTI back in 98 and it was horrible, one of the worst cars ive owned I think, the Mk1 Astra GTE I replaced it with was a hell of a lot more fun.
Don't really get why people have a huge hardon for the 205gti, I bet 9/10 people who say its the best hot hatch ever probably havent even seen one let alone driven it.

The astra GTE was a horrible car, very fast but the handling was skittish to say the least, especially at speed.
And yes, I have driven good examples of both.

I cannot help but think you had a bad one? Heck the fact that you say a Astra GTE was more fun makes me suspect your car reviewing skills
.I cannot think of a single person who has driven a 205 GTI and didn't like it. This is includes my mate who'll defend R5GTTs to the absolute death, but I did catch him in his weaker moments saying the the 205 GTI is "Better than most"

So wrong, I drove both when they were new, GTE wasn't fit to lick the feet of the small Pug, you had a bad one.
You must have had a right mutt of a 205, because despite it's fantastic engine, the Astra isn't even in the same league as the Peugeot.

Overall, the Mk1 Golf GTi, but purely as a drive the 1.6 205 Gti is better.....ever so slightly.
