Yes folks -- the world is turning upside down. Apple has announced an iPhone OS 4 event on April 8th at 10AM for a "sneak peek of the next generation of iPhone OS software." So if you're wondering about the future of the platform... your answers will appear sooner than you think. The team collectively dropped an "OMG" when we saw this news, as it's pretty unusual to see such a big event coming from Apple right on the heels of something like the iPad launch. Of course we'll be there -- at Apple's Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino -- live and direct, providing the liveblogging coverage you know and love.

Do you reckon the 3G (non-S) will be able to handle multitasking? It's already a bit grindy with some apps as it is...

i wonder if it will be free or are they going to take more money from us again???

I would imagine (although I could be wrong) that it'll be like all the previous updates, ie free for the iPhone but chargeable for the iPod Touch. If you want to know why, search and feel free to blame accounting laws and specifically Paul Sarbanes and Michael Oxley.

If it is even introduced I'd expect it to not be available on the older iphones. Seems pretty justified on the older hardware in terms of it affecting performance/battery life. Also they need to give people a reason to buy the newer models, just like how MMS wasn't available on the original iphone even though technically the hardware was there to support it.

Wow, wasn't expecting this! Looking forward to Thursday. Multitasking surely will be there along with perhaps a universal mail box.

I'm actually expecting 3 different OS4.0 versions. One for the iPad and also the 3Gs that obviously includes multitasking, and one for the 3G and 2G that doesn't include it.

Trust me, my 3G already handles multitasking very well, and I've got a good setup, except the phone just cannot handle today's 'newer' apps that appear on the appstore as they have increasingly larger memory footprints. The 3G feels rather sluggish with heavy apps, for example that Guardian one.

Splintering the OS and hardware is a shame in a way.

The completely standard platform was one of the key benefits of the original iPhone/Touch over the zoo of (mainly) awfulness in the years preceding. Not that I don't expect Apple to tread carefully.
