VW Golf Mk6 GTD - opinions?

Hi guys I've just noticed this thread while I was Googling. I'm supprised we have a motoring section on here?

Now having a browse through these threads there is very little info on the GTD its mainly BMW, Fox or other VW cars.

I've had a new Golf GTD (170) at the end of January. Oh by the way the 170 is PS not BHP which is 167 BHP. I ordered it last September and they quoted 12 weeks delivery which would have been a nice Christmas present. At the end of November they rang me and said there would be another month delay with some bull over the scrappage scheme being very popular. I picked it up on 27/01/2010 from Stoke Volkswagen. I didn't have any special additions

Golf GTD 2.0 (170) 2010, 5 Door, Shadow Blue, Flat Tyre Indicator, Service Plan, GAP Plan, Basic Protection Pack, AutoGlym LifeShine.

Yes I'm very happy with the car it being the first diesel I've ever owned. The fuel consumption hasn't been as good as I would expect. The first full tank did 43.2mpg, the second did 38.8mpg and I'm on the third tank now. But its still 25% better that my old 1993 Rover 216 GTi. Now this is mostly local running with the occasional cruise. I hope it gets better as the weather gets warmer. Where else would you get £2000 for a 17 year old Rover?

Now last September when I ordered it I did the usual web search for VW forums and I've joined 4 or 5 of them. The one I use the most is VW Audi Forum. ;)

VAG diesels take a while to loosen up. Give it 5-10k miles and it'll rev more freely and be a lot smoother, plus you'll get better fuel consumption.

Also - NEVER buy GAP insurance from a dealer :(

You can get it for your car for about £100 for 3 years. I've heard of VW dealers charging £500 for the same cover!

Gotta hand it to the salesman though, his sales manager will be over the moon as he shifted GAP, Lifeshine and did a scrappage deal at list. Did he manage to stitch you up with VW finance as well?

Never mind, think of the mpgz! All 38 of them :D

Looks like you've been taken in by both the lifeshine con AND the scrappage con.

Not really, I was offered the AutoGlym package when I ordered it at around £350 but I said no thanks. When it finally arrived after 4 months which was an extra month that was quoted I asked what are they going to give me for waiting all this time? They asked what I wanted? I never thought about cruise control before but talking to friends they said its worth having. I asked it they would fit the cruise control, the VW addon price was £220. No we can't do that its too expensive. I said no its not its £60 for the switch and you just programme the ECU to accept it. No they can't do that. Ok then give me the AutoGlym package. No we can't do that but we can let you have it for half price so it cost me £175. When you are spending £25,000 plus on a car and waiting 4 months for it they are very tight on what they give you. Plus they said the VAT has increase this year which VW are absorbing that cost. I said well if they had delivered the car as stated that was on the old VAT price it their fault for not delivering on time.

Before I went to pick the car up I printed out a VW checklist of things to check when collecting a new car. I asked about was spare oil for topping up. They said it was supplied on the MK5 Golfs but they stopped it on the MK6 but they gave me a bottle. I asked where the bottle opener was as there is an impression in the centre console for one, the list said dealer like to keep these. No they aren't supplied anymore. When I read the handbook when I got home it said there should be a bottle opener. When I went back a few days later I asked them again, they said they would have to order one which they did. Not that I'm bothered about a bottle opener its just part of the cup holders in the front which I won't use.

I don't know how you can say the scrappage scheme is a con? The government pay £1000 and the manufacterer pays £1000 of the list price. Whether they add £1000 onto the list price is hard to find out. I have no complaints about the price. ;)

Not really,

Yes really, as you then go on to explain..

so it cost me £175.

Exactly my point. It's just there to make dealers a shedload of margin. It isnt worth anything like this.

When you are spending £25,000 plus on a car

Are you saying that you have spent £25k+ on your diesel Golf? That didnt even have the cruise control you wanted?

Easy - the £1k comes out of the manufacturer/dealer margin, it is money that without scrappage you would have been able to haggle off anyway. The other £1k from the government - well your car with an MOT was worth circa £500, so in reality, all you gained there is £500.

Which you then wasted on overpriced crap from the dealer like Lifeshine and GAP insurance (You can get GAP elsewhere for a fraction of the price).

Did you complete the dealers lucky day by taking out VW finance?

Plus the extra £1000/£2000 they've slapped on the price of the vehicle to make up for it.

Wait, hang on, A Golf GTD doesn't even have cruise control? The Octavia vRS CR TDI has cruise control and can be purchased (currently) for just over 17k (VAT free still - in fact it was last september as well). Heck a CR TDI vRS with a few options (columbus unit, leather, Xenons, PDC, Auto lights/wipers etc) is just over 20k. Why is the golf so much more?

The badge.

The VW version of my car was £2.5k more expensive. Hence why I swapped my VW for a Skoda...

Why are we so fixated on the cost of a brand new Golf? Lots of new cars are silly prices compared to what we are used to at the moment.

A quick glance at the nearest BMW competitor, the 120d M-sport (177hp) gives a base figure of £24,705, before we get anywhere near the option list.

The Audi A3 S-line 170hp diesel base price is £22,565

The VW Golf GTD 170hp diesel base price is £23,600.

So yes the Golf is 1k more than the A3, and I haven't compared what options prices are (or what comes with each one). But the A3 is a generation older than the mk6. I have no doubt the next refresh of the A3 will once more push the boundaries of diesel hatch pricing, it just seems to be the world we are living in at the moment.
