The new VelociRaptors

Shame it won't fit in my laptop's docking station.

The Sata's throttled @ 150mb/s anyway so this would have been perfect if it would fit.

I've got a scorpio black in the laptop at the moment and the stock 80gb hitachi in the dock, which will be used as spare / backup / hotswap with my desktop when I get round to replacing it. I'd go Green if they had a bigger cache.

cant understand why would you pay say £210 for a 450 raptoe when you could get a ssd like 80gb intel and a 500 gb hdd for £230 with more space and what ive heard a lot quicker thank a raptor...i think for the raptors to be of any intrest now they should be at least halved in price imo.

Price vs Performance vs Capacity

It's a sliding scale and everyone fits into a slightly different spot based on requirements and circumstances. You could run the same argument between Air-Water-Phase cooling, "Why would anyone go for water when you get sooooo much better performance out of Phase?" (<-Rhetorical BTW :p)

I suspect that these drives will fit nicely between the economy of Conventional Sata and the bleeding edge performance of SSD (and let's be honest - all that extra potential is largely wasted on us anyway...)

Aye, it would work for me (if it fitted) as sometimes I use my laptop + dock as a desktop. I am now for instance. So hard drive performance & capacity is important. I haven't the inclination to spend megabucks on a 300gb+ SSD and sometimes need that sort of storage on my laptop.

One of these would be great in the dock though as it would give me the storage I need AND give me faster disk speeds when on AC. The SSD solution means I'd either leave data at home have to take the dock.

I can live with slower disk speeds when on a battery. However, it's irrelevant as the bugger wouldn't fit.

Has it been said if these drives are backward compatible or do they require the 6gb interface?

Will need a controller card if so...

I would love a pair of 600GB VR's to tide me over untill SSD's are cheap enough for data storage. However they would have to halve in price.

Couldn't think of a better setup than a fast SSD for OS and key progs and a pair of 600gb Raptors for files etc.

simlar setup to what i have atm.

im using a 40gb SSD for my OS and main programs i use, and a 300gb Velociraptor for the rest of my games and programs

Hopefully my SSD will arrive sometime today! My Raptor's only 74gb, but over 5 years old and still going well. Might subsequently see the price of the Veloci Raptors (150gb) come down now and get myself one of those for shiz.
