Cinema Vs Stay at home

I think your figures are skewed slightly.

46" screen = not free
Bluray capable player = not free
5.1 surround = not free
7 ppl round eating/drinking and using your toilet = not free

That's a relevance fallacy. He already has the setup, so at this point it costs next to nothing to watch at home, but a considerable amount at the cinema, how much it cost to buy is irrelevant. Besides I'm sure the tv is used for watching tv and perhaps video games far more than watching movies, so it's not an accurate comparison by any measure.

Why must people be so pedantic, if you went to the cinema or not, most people have a decent tv, its hard to buy a "bad" tv, so its not a choice of go to the cinema, OR buy a tv or HT setup.

For 99.9% of people its buy a TV, and on top of that maybe go to the cinema or not.

Cost of sweets, cost of drinks, not a huge deal to me, its a rarity and £5 won't bankrupt most people though if you wanted to go twice a week it would add up.

Its the experience, I can't pause when I go for a pee, and you can never be sure you're in a dull bit, or that you won't miss the best scene in a film. Thats the single worst thing for me, factor in noise, the fact that to get good seats means getting in for a new film ages before the film actually starts.

Noise, other people munching, or decided to mention "oh this is that bit I read about, the scene where the main guy dies" , chavs with phones going off etc, etc.

Again at home, I need to pee, a quick pause, someone coughs over an important line, rewind a couple seconds, phone goes off, film isn't ruined, decide your hungry/thirsty, don't need to miss any of the film. its more comftable, its more convinient, its massively cheaper and takes a heck of a lot less time overall.

Personally I used to like cinema's as a little kid, but you crappy VHS's at home, on low def tv's and most people didn't have proper speakers. I grew out of the "cinema's are good because they can turn the volume way up" way of thinking, when I was maybe 12.

A film being loud, or on a huge screen thats so far away its not actually really a better experience than watching a small screen in a small room, doesn't make the film experience better in any single way for me.

Just read this actually about their projectors, might explain why it looked better

http://www.apollocinemas.com/sony4k-testedforimpact.aspx

That's probably just down to poor projectionists to be honest, there's absolutely no reason why a film should be shown out of focus (other than sheer laziness) and if a film is treated properly and the machines are properly looked after then there should be little to no scratching. That site doesn't say what sort of refresh rate the films are being shown at on the digital projectors (I would be interested to know simply out of curiosity as I can't find the info anywhere) but I do know that some projectors cheat with the 35mm print and flash 48 times per second, not 24 even though there are still only the 24 frames of actual film print.

There are other things which can cause flicker though such as a bulb near the end of it's life or a poorly maintained machine which can lead to the picture subtly jumping around on the screen. These are issues which I believe simply don't affect digital projectors due to them having less moving parts.

I'd love to see a direct, side by side comparison of 35mm print and a digital print to see if there are any major differences.

A truly fun cinema experience is becoming harder and harder to come by, tbh. I have a decent home cinema here, so I do still have fun with Blu-ray etc. at home - but I love the cinema experience, still.

It's almost at the point where I'm refusing to go see anything below an "18" certificate at the cinema, as that gives you the most chance of having a quiet viewing. Even then, that's not 100%.

The best theatrical experience these days is at festivals.

Cinema's sound expensive there, for 19€ per month here ( usually 7€ ish per film if you don't get the subscription, but you can easily get '''2 for the price of 1'' tickets in supermarkets or so so 3.50 per film.) you can get a card to visit the cinema as often as you want. You're not allowed to take your own food or drinks but it's VERY easy to smuggle your own, if they'd moan I'd tell them where to stick it and walk away and never pay a penny to them again, their choice... Didn't have the problem of annoying people yet but I only really went there a couple of times because I can't be bothered to watch Telesync downloaded films when no dvd or blu ray or leaked screener sources are avaiable, otherwise watching at home is in every way superior.

The Vue has over 18 screenings at nights, takes care of the kids.

The only one I have nearby is a Cineworld (which I have an unlimited card for) - they don't go by anything other than the film ratings and I really don't like coming out of the cinema at like 11pm or midnight for some reason. Knocks me off-kilter.

The last viewing of anything that was completely ruined for me was "Paranormal Activity". Just SO MANY groups of idiot teenagers yacking, munching, throwing, shining phones and lights it was ******* ridiculous.

It doesn't help that my favoured genre is horror, and we all know that the genre draws youngsters at the lower ratings. Hence, my theatrically avoiding most things under "18" these days.

Looking forward to "Repo Men" this weekend.

Went to the cinema on Wednesday to find a queue around the bloody street. Walked in 15 minutes into the movie, couldn't find seats, no one willing to move over, £8 parking, school kids running up and down the isles and the movie had been out for 2 ******* weeks. I keep saying never again, I don't know why we bother - the half price offer just isn't enough to endure the Wednesday lot!

Go on any other weekday, bring your own food and go somewhere with free parking!

Orange Wednesday should be renamed "Keep Away Wednesday". Seriously.

I have a unlmited card which is £13.50 a month. I never buy any food or drink while in the cinema and always bring my own, sometimes I even take in a full McD meal with a McFlurry lol.

3D movies used to be included with the unlimited card but now they charge £1.50 on top for each one so now days I tend to sneek into the 3D showings and bring my own glasses :p

The cinema can be very cheap if you know how :)

There's always one :p

My wife finds it hilarious lol, soon I'll be that old bloke who sits at the back on his own :p

I'd love to see a direct, side by side comparison of 35mm print and a digital print to see if there are any major differences.

That's a good point actually, wouldn't mind seeing that myself :)

Got a family friend who is a cinema nut, he's built his own in his house and restores old projection units.

It's an awesome setup he's got, the room you go into is just like a little cinema with proper comfy cinema seats :)

The range of kit he's got is immense, some of the projectors really are a work of art to look at, massive floor standing things some of them.

Hate to think how much it costs to do that sorta thing though!

I bought a projector, as a result i rarely go to the cinema. If it is something i must see and dont want to wait then i will go but i usually wait for reviews first.

the prices have gone up to stop pricks going to them i had thought however nothing beats watching a film on your sofa with the toilet close by, unlimited drinks and food that aint a rip off and the ability to pause
