Times said:
Family planning authorities have detained hundreds of people against their will in a campaign to sterilise 10,000 men and women suspected of trying to violate China’s strict birth control policies.

Not sure what to think about this, really. The country has a huge population and it makes sense to have some sort of policy, perhaps free or subsidised contraception, but forced sterilisation?

Going by the article, I'm guessing that the people in question actually want more children though, rather than there being inadvertent pregnancies.

One thing's for sure - I wouldn't mind seeing it introduced on a few council estates near me. Fed up of subsidising lazy-arse sponger lifestyles... Who would trust the Govt. to do stuff to their bodies, though, they'd probably end up taking organs to pay their second mortgages... :p

I agree, the govt here should do the same thing with chavs sterilise them all I say.

In all seriousness, some sort of medium-term contraceptive solution until they actually want to make a contribution to society would be more workable :) I think that having children you can't afford to pay for is not fair on everyone else and most importantly not fair on the child.

Anyway, some sort of birth limit surely isn't a bad thing in general. Everyone harps on about green credentials these days. Surely the most environmentally friendly thing you can possibly do is to not have children?

Offer £5k to anyone who wants it (male or female under the age of 35) if they agree to sterilisation. Anyone who takes up the offer probably isn't fit to be a parent anyway.

note: This isn't a serious suggestion btw :)

Can't they just stick contraceptive drugs in the water supply? Nobody would have to know then.

£5K would be an absolute bargain for the state. I daresay they could afford to offer a lot more than that if you take into account the costs of schooling, healthcare and any other public services a person would use in their lifetime.

Not sure if I'd fancy a knife near my goolies but if the deal was about £30K I might go for it, seeing as I don't plan on having any myself! :)

I knew loads of people here would be screaming 'Forced operations on members of the public? Sounds awesome'

:(

Perhaps we could also have big government trucks come and round up 'undesirables' in the middle of the night and take them away somewhere (who cares where but away from us)? Hmm, the army would be useful for coordinating such things eh?? We could get them awesome black uniforms with skull and crossbones on their caps? :(

So, those of you claiming something should be done about population control, I assume you've decided to sterilise yourselves? How about going one step further and ending your own lives?

China have got huge problems with their one-child policy. Little emporer syndrome, infanticide, illegal abortions and a rapidly aging population. Wikipedia has a good page on it.

If someone offered that to me I would take it. Easy £5k for something I am going to get done anyway....
