China and Sterilising Parents...

What would you have us do?

Would help if we stopped the god damned Catholic church throwing "aid" around all of Africa telling them they'll go to hell if they use rubbers, refusing to tell people how you catch aids and refusing to actually help the people if its not on their own warped terms.

The guy on Charlie Brooker made a very good speach about the untold truth of global warming and carbon footprints and all that complete rubbish, no matter how much effort you put into reducing yours, every kid you plop out will use 1000x times what you can save in a lifetime anyway.

Overpopulation is the planets biggest problem, theres too much power being used, because theres too many people who need a house, heating and keep the factories in China working overtime because all those extra people buy all the crap they make.

There really isn't a single area on the planet that NEEDS a higher population to survive, we have too many people anyway, it just fuels wars, greed, jealousy etc, etc, etc.

Population though is increasing rapidly, worldwide population is likely to be, well, ridiculous in 30-40 years if something isn't done about it right now.

Starting with that pratt who is always in the papers, the guy who gets stupid women pregnant then leaves them, doesn't work and has 8 kids or something now.

To be honest, if theres a strict law on having kids and a bunch of people break it, while sterilisation is a tad harsh, putting them in jail would probably be worse. Considering if they decide to follow the law they won't be having kids anyway, is sterilisation really "that" bad, other than the forced part of it?

If they decided to do it here, to people who haven't broken a law though, just to curb population and it was random then that would be totally out of line.

I would fully support a law banning people from having more than two children though. Something not overly cruel though, forcing abortions would be awful but legally having to be on the pill, or use condoms or being snipped for free at a good quality clinic and then if there are any accidental pregnancies the woman is free to choose to keep it or have an abortion.

We have too few jobs and too many people already, can you imagine if we had an extra 10million people in 20 years, what jobs would they do, there will only be less and less jobs by then, it would be a complete disaster, its almost a complete disaster now in this country.

I think it's sad that people are being forced to accept these measures. However, this planet has only finite resources - the number of humans cannot keep growing indefinatley.

Not enough, make it anyone earning less than £50k, sound good?

That wouldnt work as the wage in the south of the country is artificially higher than the north, forcing the entire northern population south if that ever happened.

Sad thing is about the country is 1 generation of dole scrounging scumbags breeds another generation of them. They get brought up thinking its the norm, have a sub standard level of education as they basically think "well whats the point" and basically only exist to have kids.

It definately needs to stop some way or another

Yes a bed time story is a great illustration of how we are doomed.

its symbolic to show that even when faced with paradise, humans are inherrantly stupid enough to make the wrong choice for personal gain over the benefit to EVERYONE.

ultimately humans are selfish.

they may believe it is their right to have a child, do they care whether the world can take that incremental child or not? no because it is their, 'right'.

you can take the daily fail story re the scrounger on 42k with 7 kids. he thought that his situation was fine, because he was fine. not realising that infact himself, and everyone like him are parasitic bastions of economic/social failure.

could you ever explain to him, or the thousands like him that what is wrong with taking things - whether or not they are offered on a platter? i honestly dont think you could.

Bit late coming to the party but let me amend that headline for you so it reads correctly

Family planning authorities have detained hundreds of people against their will in a campaign to sterilise 10,000 dissidents suspected of being Christians, Muslims, Falun Gong or just considered trouble makers. It's taking the long view and ensuring you don't pass on your non conformist ways to the next generation of Chinese citizens

That's a fallacy as proven by the American Eugenics program. They did it even before the Nazi's though it was a good idea. It isn't.

Where?

That is merely a summary of the history of eugenics in the US. If the Nazis never took hold then eugenics would be more popular than ever today and modernized with current ethical beliefs.

As the wiki article mentions, there are still lots of common eugenics practices occurring throughout the world. Ironically, Israel is one of the nations at the forefront of genetic screening.

Today, we just don't call it eugenics and try to distance similar schemes. E.g., visa entry to canada awards thopse with hgiher education (PhD gets hgiher chance than Masters, gets higher chance than undergrad, higher the school etc.) and Language abilities (Friench + English abilities are desirable). These cognitive test help maintain an influx of above average intelligence and ability.
immigrants.

It modern society it is still not 100% socially acceptable for people with severe retardation or known heritable genetic conditions from having children. You can volunteer for genetic tests before marriage/planned pregnancies in most countries, genetic tests after pregnancy allows the choice of termination.

Choice is the key in 21st century eugenics.

more than half of the country then  ....

Maybe I'm wrong, but I read mmj's post as being a sarcastic reply to Silvercut's suggestion that we sterilise all the chavs.

I read it as 'where do we draw the line as to who is a 'chav'?'

Silvercut may be happy to sterilise all the 'chavs' that conform to his ideas, but someone else may consider anyone who doesn't earn over 50k to be deserving of the same treatment.

Well, that's how I read it.
