Icelandic Volcanic Eruption - Significant Disruption to UK Flights

I live a few miles away from Kent International Airport, and a medium sized jet (737-sized) took off a few moments ago. Maybe another test flight or are the restrictions being eased?

my dad got offered by the airline to fly back to Hong Kong or get on a coach to take him from Rome to Calais but then he has to make his own travel arrangements from Calais onwards.. so he decided to fly back to Hong Kong and the airline is giving him a one way ticket to come back when the airports re-open.

he called this morning and said he has a weeks supply of medication left (he has diabeties, high blood pressure and heart problems etc). i hope the situation gets better v.soon, otherwise i hope he can get similar medications out there :(

It looks like UK airspace may be opened progressively from 0600 tomorrow with the possibility of the entire London and Scottish FIRs being open by 1800-2100.

Fingers crossed.

Airspace may open soon, say air traffic controllers

Air traffic controllers may be able to start opening UK airspace tomorrow, the transport secretary, Lord Adonis, said todayas British Airways reported that results of airline test flights without passengers provided "fresh evidence that the current blanket restrictions on airspace are unnecessary".

The National Air Transport Service (Nats) was expected to update its advice this afternoon – a no-fly zone is at present expected to last until at least 1am tomorrow - but Adonis who has been in constant contact with forecasters, air traffic bodies and European colleagues, said: "It may be possible to start opening UK airspace tomorrow."

In an interview on Sky News, Adonis said there had been a "dramatic decrease" in the volcano's activity.

He added: "It may be possible to start opening some UK airspace tomorrow."

National Air Transport Service??

How retarded are the Guardian given the amount of exposure Nats has had over the past week?!

Just heard the funniest thing from one of the porters who works in the warehouse whilst I was outside having a smoke:

I don't know why they're bothering sending the navy to pick up the standed people, it's not like it's a disaster or anything
