I have a p55a-ud4 gigabyte motherboard an i7 860 cpu, 4gb corsair 1600mhz and 2 x 500gb black caviars.. I have installed windows 7 64bit and the speeds i get from the raid system are about 100mb/s read write. I think it is very low considered with the speeds those drives can reach. Even an external 1TB black caviar on the esata at the back is faster than the raid..! :s Any guess?

Is the array still building? Do you have the correct up to date drivers?

Edit: Welcome to the forums :)

thnx.. :P the drivers are up to date yeah, both for the intel controler and the gigabyte. i have the raid in the gsata ports of the motherboard and not in the sata ports. could this be a problem?? but it is considered a faster port the sata 3..

If you look at this, the Marvell 9128 (the chip that is doing the RAID on the GSATA ports) is actually slower than the ICH10R (the southbridge that is used on the X58) when used in a RAID0 configuration. Considering the PCH on the P55 should perform similarly to the ICH10R, then I think you would be better off connecting the HDDs to the "chipset". This will likely require you to rebuild the RAID array.

You want to put your WD Blacks (in RAID0) on the ICH10R, then you will get the proper performance...the only time I would use the Marvell SATA6 cont. would be if I wanted to install a SATA6 HDD/SSD and then it would be as a single HDD/SSD, ie. NOT in RAID0...

i thought it would be this the problem so i changed it in the intel's sata ports and now have about 180-190mb/s. the array is on the two 500gb caviars only. the program that i use is hd tune pro. one more last question.. do you think that i should keep the 1tb black caviar in the case as external drive connected in the power supply and the esata at the back or connect it inside and change it to an internal for backups? if yes in which sata? gigabyte's or intel's? thaaaaanx!!!

If the 1Tb drive is for backups then leave it outside and only power it up when you need to. The last thing you want is a PSU problem or virus borking both your live copy and the backup.

yeah thought it would be better.. if i connect a sata 3 device in the gigabyte adapter it will be faster than the intels plain sata right?

Depends on the device. If it is just a SATA 3 HDD, then you may get slightly better burst speeds, but appreciable performance will be the same as SATA2 as the disks don't usually come close to saturating the SATA2 connection. However, if you go for a high end SATA3 SSD like this, then yes - there is significant benefits for going with the SATA3 connection.
