For those saying that electoral reform is a pipe-dream, there is a constitutional reform act currently, I believe, in the House of Lords which has a provision for a referendum on a change to 'alternative vote' system which will likely return to the Commons after the election for amendments.

The surge in support for the Lib Dems seems to have significantly increased the chances of a hung Parliament and I think it's highly likely that in such a scenario the LDs will demand electoral reform as a deal-breaker - question is, the Tories have already wedded themselves to the FPP system and opposed any change so will they compromise?

The headlines make interesting reading, it seems both Labour & Tories are trying to shift the focus to the Lib Dem policies, but I think that carries a risk that 'any publicity is good publicity' as it almost is a tacit acknowledgment that the Lib Dems are serious contenders now - not to mention that *shock horror* perhaps a number of the LD policies are quite attractive? :p

Should be a fun couple of weeks anyway.

*edit*

Also, Nick Clegg is an alumni of my college at Uni, so it's nice to see him doing well :D

Agree.

Energy security and econnomy should be at the top of everyones list, without either the country doesn't function and makes any other police useless. You are right no one will have exactly what you want, but there certainly should be certain policies that are deal breakers. Energy and screwing over large corporations should be on everyones dealbreak list.
We're not going to run out of fossil fuel production in the next four years. Stalling new nuclear development for four years is a shame, but the thing the Lib Dems are bringing to the table (including a push for renewable) I think is preferable.

Newcastle Upon Tyne East

Practically no point in me voting. But I'll be voting Lib Dem despite their retarded policies purely out of spite for Labour. Voting Tory in Newcastle is completely pointless otherwise that's where my vote would go.

Will not be voting Lib Dems simply because of their policy on Nuclear (Trident and power stations).

I suppose that leaves just conservatives left to vote for to get Labour out of power.

This. If the liberals had a different stance on this issue then they would get my vote.

to the above look at what my vote counts for....

It takes 10 years to build at least, the longer we wait the longer the build time. Due to only a fewcompanies that can make components, which allready have orders for years into the future. You then have to add on planning time. We need to be acting now. You are also removing abilities for future goverments to implement. By removing infastructure. All 3 parties have said they will have a push fir renewable.

Planning, getting them built and operational takes a fair bit of time, and we are already looking to wind down quite a few existing nuclear and fossil plants in the coming decade so it's a bit more than a shame IMO! :p

According to that article - the ten already mentioned would not be ready before 2017!

Renewables seem like a great idea but with wind power, it's not predictable as we don't have constant gale-force winds to rely upon. We don't have geothermal sources like Iceland do, and the idea of tidal power seems to have been all but ruled out? We're hardly in a prime position for solar power farms, either?

Ouch. If it wasn't for constant hung parliaments I'd be all for a PR system. Just don't know how you could work one and still produce strong governments capable of taking action. Fragile coalitions are mega fail.

Ideally you want something invetween. The current system is stupid and everyones vote should count. Just because you want one party nationally doesn't mean you want them locally.
But you also want to make sure winning party has a mojority.

yup neither systems are very good really I think I should just make all decisions for the country, ill be very fair honest! :D

i've said a few timesDictatorships are the best system on paper. always get stupid looks of my mates and they miss the point. Just a shame they are always held by people who want the power, instead of someone who wants the best for the country and takes advice. Which is why they never work. And democracy doesn't work due to red tape and having to bend over to public opinion.

How about anarchism? Not the kind given a bad name by thugs. Just no central power, total personal freedom, keep the socialist NHS, and taxes to pay for public services...?

No Lib Dem MP votes against any of the three referendum proposals over the Lisbon Treaty so I'm not very sure what you're talking about?

Have you considered politics with such a statement? You would be well suited it seems. Rather than vote FOR a referendum as they promised in their manifesto they infact abstained. The result was that the bill passed.

So, let us summarise. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Even with Mr Clegg's current popularity, our current voting system makes it impossible for him and the Lib Dems to win the election outright.

If current political polls are an indication of seats then Labour would have the most, the Conservatives second and the Lib Dems third but the Lib Dems could form a government with Labour to form an overall majority ?

In short, vote Lib Dem - get Labour ?

Pardon my ignorance but I find the British voting system confusing to say the least.

Lets say, for sake of argument, the Liberals get into power. Do you think that they may end up having to go back on their stance on nuclear power as I can imagine there'll be huge amounts of pressure from a variety of places to rethink their policy on this.
