Now then I'm only 15 at present but having just been told I have to pay for the car+all extra costs by myself , I am going to have to start saving.
Already got 1K saved away but plan to add to that.

Basically , I don't want a generic Corsa or fiesta. Out of interest I ran a insaurance quote on a Mazda-MX5 (Mid 1990's one) and the cheapest quote was £5500 . And then I ran one on the 2000 Peuegot 406 coupe and the cheapest was £8000:eek:. Didn't expect them to be so pricey , but there you go.

What I want is something different i.e (Not a generic fiesta/punto/corsa) sporty , fairly quick and cheap to run. Of course If i'm being way too specific and am Never going to get anything other than a generic supermini then please say :p.

Have to say, I admire your attitude - planning for the car 2 years in advance is very rare, as so many people around here demonstrate!

To be honest though, there's 2 problems with asking this question now. First is that when you will be able to drive, the market could be completely different to where it is now, so very difficult to reccomend something.

Secondly, if we assume you're 17 now, looking for something interesting or fun is definitely going to result in high insurance quotes. You can get them down a fair bit by adding your parents as named drivers to your policy (which is legal, the other way around definitely isnt! So please ignore the suggestion above) and shopping around.

I personally found that the small hatchbacks you mention cost much more to insure than more "grown up" cars, so if larger saloons and hatchbacks appeal then you're probably in luck. My first car was a Pug 306 1.8 which I replaced 6 months later with a Mondeo 1.8 TD - both cheaper to insure than a corsa or fiesta

a turbo diesel. you will struggle to insure anything quicker at your age.

Infact in the two years it will take you to even be legal, car prices and insurance might be completely different, so why are you asking now ?

Dont look into that, its fronting and not legal (the going on your parents insurance as a third party). If your the main driver of the car you should be the main driver on the policy. However I'm now 21 and adding my mum as a second driver still knocks nearly £200 of my policy, you should find big savings doing it that way. Just make sure if your going to be driving it the most that your the main driver.

In regards to the quotes your getting are you running them as if you were 17 and just passed? If you can wait until you are 18 that will make for significant savings, but the going rate for a brand new driver in an average car at 18 seems to be about £1000-£1500 at the minute so get saving! :)

I am asking now because I want a rough idea of how much cash I need to save on a car and how much I can spend on other things.
I am well aware that the market will be hugely different by then.

Yes I am running them as If I had just passed and was 17.

Chiiives the best car you could go for in my opinion is a snotbox with 12 months tax and MOT.

That way if it breaks, you don't really care about it and also you can have a go at fixing it yourself saving yourself some cash down the line when you want to do an oil change or change your brake discs etc.

Run that for a year or two and build up some no claims and then you can start upgrading :)

Ohh yeah and don't front. Get your own fully comp insurance and build up your NCBs.

Try running them as though you were 18, you may find they come down substantially and it may tempt you into waiting an extra year. I actually ended up with my first car locked in my garage uninsured for 2 months as it ended up being nearly £500 cheaper to wait 2 months until I turned 18!

Either way try re-running the quote with one of your parents as a named driver as that should bring it down substantially.

I had a feeling that the suggestion above was dodgy. Thank you for clarifying.
On to your second point , Thats good news , I find Small hatchbacks boring and generic. Would prefer somthing larger like a 306 or mondeo :)

Its true.

And I'd go for about a 1.3 Turbo diesel. Anything more than that and you will be baying out of your ears for insurance.

Do whatever my dad did to get my insurance cheaper and something to do with his insurance, then, as all of us teens do, fit a few light mods to the car to get some noticeable changes to the performance.

We've just finished with my friends car, 1.4 Clio (typical I know.), bought it dirt cheap, drained + changed the oil with some decent stuff, new half decent speaks, new exhaust + decent air filter and to most old hatches they're notably better. You can do all of this yourself, and especially if you can weld and know how to use a spanner.

In truth, most 1st cars get written off or crashed at least a bit, so don't go looking at mx-5's ect, cos you'll only go to see the top and and wrap it around a tree, as I have.

Go for a nice 3 door hatch, you can pick a really good one up for £1.5K if you find one, and if you've got 2 years to look + buy it (assuming you already have the cash), then put back the same amount + maybe a few hundred if you get a 1.4 petrol or 1.3 TD, especially if your not on your parents insurance.

I wouldnt consider either sporty, but they're avoiding the typical "17 year old in a small car" syndrome.

the 306 D Turbo would be ideal - pretty fun, stylish and fairly cheap to run.

With the mondeo, you're risking "old man" comments from your mates, but they're very good cars

What a load of nonssense. You can insure the right car with a larger engine no problem.

Not all teenagers are illegally fronting on the insurance, so please dont tar everyone with the same brush.

Guessing you wouldnt declare the suggested mods to the insurance company either?

Why do you keep suggesting he fronts on his insurance which is illegal and could lead to 6 points and even more expensive insurance for a considerably long time? Not to mention the fact it would cost him his license if it happened within the first 2 years!

Well, no it's not going to be entirely different. You still need to save money, research into what cars are cheap to insurance and then find the actual vehicle.

And the reason why insurance is so ****ing high in this country is because:

Get on your mums/dads insurance as a 3rd party, then, as all of us teens do,

Which as stated above, is illegal.
