The Stoke-On-Trent Thread

sure! Cheadle? Rocester HQ? Fenton?

All of them, i used to work for the company that provided the office furniture to ALL JCB ( even france :( ) used to have to go down pretty much every week.

Really nice place. Loved having dinner sat around the various "parks" that JCB had in from of their buildings :D

Has anyone had the delight of going to ST1? Went a couple of times in my early uni days (cheap drinks) - only one I have been too :(:o

On a less, manky strip club theme, has anyone tried a hot sandwich from 'Plants' near Sainsburys (Newcastle). They make some mean sandwiches!

Yes to both :D

you can't talk mglover, Uttoxeter has the most small town minded knuckle dragging thugs I've ever come across per square mile. It's the only place i've been started on for simply standing doing nothing.

I've been gigging in the Stoke area for 40 years and uttoxeter is the only place where somebody has tried to pick a fight with me while I've been on stage. I walked off and the committee did nothing.

I go to Keele university and have never actually been around Stoke only passed through on the bus. Must say it is one really depressing place to pass through!.

Its strange since Keele is a great place and so close to Stoke.

arghh sorry to pick on you but your just a typical Keele uni goer! Base your whole opnion on a bus ride.

Keele has nothing! seriously its just a campus. Stoke on tent is naff but its alright for a bit of Saturday shopping in the city center. Dont take offence i hear it alllll the time from Keele people.

Get yourself up Hanley on a student night

Take it with a pinch of salt i go staffs uni :D

I was born in Stoke,

lived in hanley, smallthorne, stanfields, burslem, bentilee, and blurton lol all the good places eh?!?!
and as of two days ago am now a resident of Stone :D bliss

i dont think stoke is that bad and have lived in some prety rough areas and never had any problems same with anywhere really some good folk some bad. its not the council's fault the place is populated by *********. and dont think any amount of money plughed in will make any sort of difference

its not like there all oatcake munching stella drinking stoke/vale fans :S

Welcome to Stone.

I originally lived in Meir Hay and moved to Stone approx 10 years ago. It depresses me driving into Stoke everyday for work however when i drive home it makes my appreciate how much nicer Stone is to live in.

Unfortunately i work for Kier who were Stoke councils housing maintenance team...so im sure you can imagine some of the delightfull people i get to meet on a daily basis

I do go to Hanley most student nights :p. Its a lot better than Newcastle Under Lyme and Keele SU most of the time. While Keele is just a campus it has an amazing atmosphere very relaxed and studenty.

Thing with being a Keele goer is that theres no point actually going to Stoke centre to buy things as Hanley on the bus is only a couple more minutes past Stoke.

I've always lived in Stoke. The thing I like about it most is that even though it's a decent size city, you are never far from the rural, almost countryside areas like alsager etc. If I spend a day or two in Manchester/Birmingham etc, it gets a bit much just wall to wall city. If I spend a day or two in the middle of Wales, that too gets a bit much because everything just seems miles and miles away. Oh and there's a PC place there that's OK.

Stoke

Hanley =city center

How long have you studied at Keele? I left last year, there were such few OcUKers at Keele :(

Weird correlation but I drive to Crewe for work every day which makes me depressed, but driving home to the mother land makes me appreciate the fact I don't live in crewe!

Keele is great. I will admit, the night life isn't what it used to be. Back in 2003+ era, every Monday night (Manics) would be rammed with great atmosphere. Wesnesday nights would be rammed too with all the sports/society crowds and Friday too as it was the weekend. These days, people come out very late or not at all. There is something for everyone though. Highly recommend the Pig n Rat campus bar, they usually put some superb events on (especially Pig Fest).

I dont get the Stoke knocking so much, its your mindset and what you make of things.
I lived in Shelton for 4 years at uni and didn't see much bad or out of the ordinary, had a wicked group of friends of students and locals and had a lot of good nights out.

Dead close to Manchester and Birmingham on the train and 10x cheaper.

Yeah theres some run down poor bits and some places you wouldnt go at night but there is with any big town or city.

tbh the people of Stoke are friendly and you get dickheads wherever you go so all in all I dont think its a bad place..

If you like to look on the negative sides of the place then so be it but I had a wicked time there as it is what you make of it

** oh and ps I live in the heart of the lake district, so that must mean something!

Moved to Stoke as a teenager in 96 with my mother. Somehow ended up an honorary 'neckender' as most of my friends were from that way.

Only reason I am still here is because I have a very nice job and 2 young kids with my now ex-wife. So stuck here for a while.

The severe lack of correct spelling and grammar is not a great advertisement for Stoke-On-Trent and its habitants.

Always thought this. For an area with such a high concentration of higher education sites, how can the locals be so narrow to put it politely. Ambition certainly seems to be the exception to the rule.

Well our council hasn't developed the city for about 15 years so id say its quite accurate

The joys of being sandwiched between two of the biggest cities in the country and not unlucky enough to have been bombed like central Manchester was forcing the council to address the short comings. It doesn't help that Stoke is 6 towns and not 1 city either as the traffic infrastructure is a joke which drives away business. Also, it is a safe labour seat and doesn't require money to buy our vote (cynic) and also lets face it Stoke Council (and Mayor) couldn't be trusted to do a weekly shop in the supermarket let alone shrewdly invest any money in projects to improve the area (Cultural Quarter being a perfect example of this)

At one point Stoke was the cheapest place to buy a house (circa 2004 iirc), well there is good reason for this!!

No it wasn't. Inner city Newcastle (Tyne not Lyme) has always been the cheapest as somehow it is worse than Stoke. Horrible thought that even Liverpool is more expensive than Stoke though.

Anyway I've seen the Council's plans (mainly for Hanley the City Centre), they have a 3D model of how it's going to look eventually and it looks very good indeed. You're right though they seem to be typical of council stuck in red tape and bureaucracy. E.g. I asked about the regeneration of Stoke town centre and they said they first needed to form a board of about 11 people, then get an office premisis in the town itsself (!?) away from the Civic Centre, and a whole load of other admin that seemed completely over the top to me before they then sat down to talk about the plans.

Hanley plans have been shelved due to lack of investment I believe (shame as I loath 'the potteries' sad excuse as a shopping venue) as for Stoke regeneration that is at the mercy of St Modwen and they have moth balled everything until the economy picks up (they have been lobbying the council to grant them an extension to all the planning permission and threatening to pull out completely if they don't)

Stoke is not a nice place to live, but everyone knows they have to take a bite out of the same **** sandwich everyday and at times can genuinely surprise even me with random acts of kindness.

And another thing, the whole meeting women situation here is ridiculous, why is it they all want some horrible watery muscled roid monster with that horrible wetted down clippered hair who is a lying, cheating, violent partner, is it purely so they have something to complain about with their girlfriends? This really perplexes me (I travel to Bristol a lot to go out and you don't see this phenomenon there) Ties in with the lack of ambition maybe.
