The Nokia 5800 Express Media (Tube) Thread

Had it for over a year now, and overall am very happy with it.

But Vodafone and their delays to releasing their rubbish broken firmware has really really p***** me off!

have lost both my stylus's, need to get some more....any ideas? also how to slow the scrolling on the text message list....it jumps pages really quickly. cheers

My joy was short lived, it's now started crashing with opera :( My head fell right off and i've just bought a Hero as a stop gap until my contract is up for renewal in May. It's a shame, as there is a lot i like about the phone, however the bugs are starting to give the hump.

A decision you won't regret, the Hero is 10x better than the 5800, you'll be amazed how much more user-friendly Android is. :)

Upgrade to the v40 firmware if you haven't already. If you cant, debrand it using NSS and change the product code to Europe. This will show all firmwares udpates via NSU and grab at least v40.0.005

This provides the iPhone scrolling functionality to the phone so you can scroll with your finger as fast or as slow as you like :)

Don't see Android offering anything new at all though except oooh I can scroll with my thumb yipee.....

Basic functionality is still missing such as Bluetooth sync and transfer which are huge holes.

I'd also agree with you in in principal if your Milestone didnt cost 3 times the price the 5800.

The other guy has also bought a Hero which was my first dip into Android and I could not wait to get rid of it. It was one of the slowest phones Ive ever used.

What an informed, objective statement. Ahem.

I wasn't referring to my Milestone specifically when I was talking about the difference in usability between it and the 5800, I was talking about Android in general. Despite some missing features it a FAR superior OS to Symbian. The Hero with the latest software is not a slow phone, my colleague has one and it's smooth as butter 99% of the time. In comparison the 5800 lags despite every update.

Well being as Ive owned 2 different Android handsets, then yes I would agree with you, it is an informed statement.

Quite clearly Android is the superior OS in terms of usability but functionally what new does it bring that wasn't being done years ago? Answer is nothing.

I'm all for competition in the market place and Android sure does bring that, but every single decent specced phone coming onto the market now has Android on it and I fear innovation may stall because of it.

Just bought an unlocked Motorola Dext for £150 delivered to replace my 5800, which I hope to sell and get at least £100 back. £50 to go android isn't too bad, the Dext is confirmed by motorolla to be getting Eclair 2.1 soon.

The 5800 was pretty good with the v40 update, and Nokia PC suite is great, I used it for tethering and dealing with my calendar/SMS over bluetooth from my PC's all the time, but it was struggling a bit with the amount of multitasking I do and the resistive touchscreen was getting on my nerves.
I really wanted to try android out as well.

So the best thing would be to continue to develop new OS and further fragment the market? Clearly not.

Android is going to help standardise and provide consistency to a whole breed of smartphones, and has plenty of room to improve as hardware etc changes.

Even WIndows 7 isn't bringing functionality to the table that hasn't been seen anywhere else, hell it hasn't got a clipboard for Gods sake... but UI is everything with a modern phone, as anyone who uses one for hours a day will attest to.

Updating now as well. Not quite sure what improvements it's meant to bring but we shall see. On O2 btw.

Well after some investigation. This is what I have discovered about the update:

When browsing artists in the music player, when you use the scroll bar the letter of the alphabet appears as you go up and down making it a bit easier to pin point artists quicker if you have a lot of music by different artists on there.

As well as this scrolling seems even more responsive in terms of kinetic scrolling.

Album art appears as a thumbnail next to the artists.

Also when going back through the menus from the media player, at the last level instead of the right button being exit, it goes to hide and takes you to the home screen.

Transitions between menus are more responsive.

This is what I have noticed so far. Don't know if any body else has discovered anything else??
