Anyone else see the shadow transport secretary on BBC? Is there any issue that the Tories won't use for tut for tat point scoring? I can guess what Cameron will hammer brown on tomorrow.

Why should there be an issue. The Labour government have been slow to respond and funny how things have changed since pressure from the aviation industry has been applied.

I also feel the Conservative shadow transport secretary was bang out of order. Considering some other European nations still have closed airspace, or just opening up now.

Could you imagine what would happen if the airspace was opened up early and a plane crashed?

Indeed, while it's somewhat inconvenient not being able to fly back on time I suspect it would be a damn sight more inconvenient being dead. I can't be certain of that but I reckon it would be fair to call it a reasonable suspicion for now.

Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Wednesday April 20, 0945

Overnight most of the UK’s airspace has been available with the exception of an area over the north west of Scotland which has continued to be affected by a dense concentration of volcanic ash. We continue to work with the latest information and guidance from our safety regulator, the CAA, the Met Office and Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre on the predicted movements of the area of dense volcanic ash. Based on the latest information, we anticipate that this area will continue to centre on the north west of Scotland and may extend further south into Scottish airspace during today.

Between the period of 0100 – 0700 on 21 April NATS handled 130 flights in airspace over England and Wales and 35 flights in Scottish airspace (including Northern Ireland). We are in regular contact with the UK airports and airline operators to understand the latest information on flights entering UK airspace and our operation is ready to respond to an increase in demand.

Passengers should contact their airlines to find out how the current situation will affect their travel plans. We anticipate being able to provide a further update late this afternoon.

Agreed, if Labour would have pushed for the airlines to fly and a plane crashed due to volcanic ash it would be the end of Labour and Camero and his cronies would have been all over them saying how stupid it was to re-open the airspace so soon.

It's only a matter of time until it closes again anyway, according to most sources that mention Katla it's going to go up, and when it does everything will be grounded, properly!

Least it gives them time to fix the damage from flying in the ash

Looking at the webcams, the volcano appears to be spewing nothing at all. Its all gone quiet. Must be having a day off!

Agreed, it's not if it will happen, it's when will it happen and what preperations will the goverment & NATS take. as it's been said Katla is well overdue, now the goverment know how it affects the Air industry and wouldn't be surprised some companies go bust. the Government need to work closely with volcanologist on the seisemic activity in iceland, also the Met-Office. if however the governemnt don't do nothing we could possibly hit another recession with jobs being cut ect..... Tax rises to cover the loss in profit, so again where will the money come from us! the tax payers.
