First Car..

thought about a classic? Might be a bit mad, and might not be something your interested in, but you'll save a fortune on insurance.

ahaha , just read your thread nice car you got there :).
I would think about it , but I haven't a clue how to do a thing on a modern car let alone an old one.

Hmmm , the mk1 focus looks like it might be a better option. For a grand I can get a 5 door 129,000 mile focus (GHIA trim level) and if there at this price now what will they be at 2012 :D .
Off to run some insurance quotes now.

WTF , Cheapest quote I can get on mk1 focus(1.4 engine) is £2000. set my age to 18 and added parent to policy. is this a decent quote or can I get it lower.
Also my mother seems to think that to get a decent quote I should be driving something with a 1.2 or below engine.

hmmm , update. got a £1300 quote for a 1.0 polo. is this a decent quote?
edit. just got a £1200 quote for a clio that is 1 year newer and has lower mileage.. decent quote?

£1200 is about the going rate for your average 1.2 small hatch at that kind of age. The question you have to ask yourself is which is better value for money, £1200 on a small 1.0 hatchback, or £1800 on a nicer, better specced mondeo?

The latter would certainly be more expensive to run, it just depends how much you want to spend I suppose.

for your first car, unless you have a lot of money, it's not worth paying the extra £600ish for a mondeo, it will be more expensive the following year to insure as well (more expensive than a hatchback).

Factor in though, you can pick up a very nice, very well specced Mondeo with change out of £1500. Put that £1500 towards a small hatchback and the car won't be anywhere near the same standard.

Out of curiosity, how much was the clio to buy that you got the quote on?

hmmm , well theres very little difference insurance wise between the clio , 106 , or fiesta. Which one is the best overall car?

How much better specced is it going to be really? It's his first car so I don't expect he'd care. I'd rather save the money and put it towards going out, petrol etc.

edit, fair enough I see what you mean, I guess it's pros and cons really.

How did you get that price with DL, especially at 17 - unless you were a named driver? I was quoted £3000 from those morons.

No not as a named driver, as the policy holder. I've no idea, I didn't do anything special, just rang them up and they gave me that quote, I was surprised at the time also, and was going to use the Astra (which was my granddads at the time but I was planning on buying it off him cheaply) as my first car, until I realized I could insure a Herald and several other smallish engined classics for less than £500.

Hmmm , what you said binnsy got me thinking.. and I can have a mondeo for just an extra £200 on the insurance.

Is the idea to save like mad so you can take a several thousand £ hit in your 1st 2 years on insurance, or to try and do something a bit clever and wangle an affordable yet interesting start?

If it's the second example, HarryOfTheWeb has just provided an excellent demonstration.

Indeed, if you are willing to shop around to find an older car that isn't rusty, and get something with good parts availability, then it can be a great idea, although I appreciate its not everyones cup of tea. Having said that a car only needs to be 15 years old to qualify for most classic insurance policies. So a "newer" 80s car could be an option. Mk1 fiesta, mk2 golfs, mk1/2 polos, mk1/2 astras, mk3 escorts, novas...
