Hi All,

Just put together a new system (here:) which is great but I am needing a new HDD for storage of My Documents etc.

So, my question is, should I be going for a 5400 or 7200 drive?

In the past I have always gone for 7200 for speed but are the new 5400's faster? Silence is a key aim but I am prepared to compromise if the performance onf a 7200 would be slow.

Thanks again!

Hi there Humpty,

Modern 7200 drives are faster than modern 5400 drives, as you would imagine. However, drives like the 5400RPM Samsung F2 perform excellently as storage drives. I have 2 of these drives in my system for document/video storage and they are plenty fast, but also quiet and cool.

i find mydocuments is actually best put on your highest performance drive, especially if you game.

as a lot of games use mydocuments for various things, it helps to have the extra speed.

especially when it comes to saving/loading.

Thanks for that. I don't do any gaming these days so I guess I will be ok with 5400. Ordered it now so I'll see how it goes; if it isn't fast enough then I'll put it into my external casing and use it for backup.
