ok so just got myself another 4gb matched pair of dual channel mem for my Asus commando. I'm adding this to the 2gb dual channel I have at the moment.

so windows say's I have 6gb installed but only 5 usable???

I have flashed the BIOS and have a 8800gtx plugged in as well so thats not using any of it! Any ideas?

What motherboard do you have? It is possible there is a dud module.

Try removing them one at a time, if one of them makes no difference to the total shown in the BIOS then that is likely the dead one. Then remove all the modules and try to boot with the dead one to be certain.

This happened to me when I upgraded to 12GB, same OS;

RAM: 12GB (9.39GB usable)

it had said.

Re-installed Windows and it was fine ever since so not sure really what that was all about.

Yeah but surely that has nothing to do with martynbez's problem as the BIOS is only detecting 5GB.

Check the chipset specifications and also ask ASUS if there is a BIOS imposed memory limitation. Different boards had different limits and it varied by company and BIOS. My guess is that have a 6GB limit in your BIOS. So, 6GB minus the GPU memory = your 5GB cap. But, that's a guess. Verify with ASUS.

yeah see thus is what i dont get. Bios says 5gb, windows says 6gb only 5gb usable and cpu-z list all the mem!

Yes but if there is a BIOS related limit then they could all be correct, just reporting different things.

As mentioned check for a memory remap option in the BIOS that could be forcing your graphics card and other hardware to use a sub 4GB address for DMA

well I thought I would dig an old post up save opening up another.

new build same sort of problem.

Asus p6x58d-e with 6gb triple channel.

Now Install all 3 stick's in the order the the user guide said. BIOS show up as 4gb, windows has 4gb aswell. Now cpu-z picks up all 3 sticks and tells me it's 6gb!

now is there some option on this board as I'm sure as hell cant find it?

Look for the memory mapping or remapping option in BIOS. Failing that, check for a dead module or slot by trying them one at a time.
