Sadly girlfriend purchased it for my birthday and for some reason (that runs through her entire family) didn't keep receipt...or even the original box)

Is it just me that thnks it's wierd to throw away receipts for things they bought? There have been several occasions when things have broken and they've not been able to take them back because they throw away receipts etc immediately

You could go and see the factory in China where it was more than likely made and then argue with the manager about quality control?
I'd imagine it's no problem. They just go and 'acquire' a new one. Unless of course the locks have been changed.
