Right Folk, need to rant so bear with me.

I work for a large company but in a small office, normally on my own projects given to me by my MD, a project on going is going a bit **** up and as such I was asked to help with smaller analysis jobs, these turned from doing simple pin calcs to doing a full finite element analysis of a flood control door for a ro-ro (think herald of free enterprise), the other engineer has been quietly mincing around doing his own work while composing the calculation booklet.

He had booked holidays for this week, which isn't a problem but his work wasn't finished so hes been coming in to "complete his work" while I deal with the designers/draughtsmen and other engineers on the job.

So it comes today where I actually find out how much hes done, almost ******** all, and hes left to go on holiday now till next week. Which in itself isnt too bad but it leaves me to complete the full design report to be submitted to class (DNV/Lloyds etc) which hasn't even been started yet, continue the rest of the analysis of the secondary ship structure and re-write any weld calculations we have to do.

Oh and to top it off he's trying to take credit for everything I've done. I've kinda spoke to my MD about this (about job priority and the amount still left to do) but what else can I do apart from taking a huge dump in his morning coffee?

change the Auto text on his computer to change the word 'the' to ' i'm a work shy donkey'

If he minces about you may be able to come to some arrangement....

Sounds like you have already done enough by telling the MD.

Rat him out and tell the MD in no uncertain terms that lazy man has done no work.

Its not that hes done no work its more hes fluffled about with what he should have been doing, like I said i've been brought in to this as a helper yet I'm pretty much doing everything because I know if I left him to do it, it would take 3 times aslong.

Arghhhhh not sure, this is eating in to my project costs aswell as the project is over budget I'm still booking this time to my job.

really you should book your time to the relavant job, otherwise you mask issues that need to be raised. A budget variance is an important part of cost analysis, and if you've masked it, then you can't correctly compensate on the next project. You've raised the concern with the MD, so log all the work correctly, and deal with the review at the end, once its been delivered.

Well I think you better get off the forums and start working!! ;)

On lunch, no way im working through that, the only thing which has calmed me down is some nice soup and orange juice :)

It was at the MD's request to book to my job, btw its not just me booking to it, the rest of the engineers on the other job are due to this one being massively over budget due to major balls up in the initial costing.

Anyway since my lunch has calmed me down going to just graft till the point I need the other lads input then give it to the MD to decide what he wants.

So basically you are just going to do his work for him?

Yup, unfortunatly explain to my boss the amount i've done and the little bits which are left are his.

They'll probably expect you to keep doing this to be honest in future projects too.

I got put in similar situations in the past 2 jobs I have been in where I have covered for other people and then I was expected to do it all the time.

Planning on moving jobs after the summer, need something a bit more or a challenge.

That suggests an MD that is covering his own butt, always a concern. If you weren't already thinking of moving I'd be suggesting it.

I work for one of the largest oil and gas consultants in the world at the moment, not some little company so I know my job is safe in that sense, but thanks for the concern :)

/edit :- for the record I've decided to produce the design report and analysis for everything except his parts and pass it on to my MD before he returns for review so he can see my work compared to his.

I think the way you progress this is to complete the project, do the work and get it done. I've got to admit I don't envy you for the FEA analysis as I've being doing a bit of that using ANSYS recently and its a ball ache.

Any idea what area you want to move into KaHn as I've been browsing around due to my company ******* me around recently and theres not a lot around at the moment. Although you do seem a fair bit more experienced than me.
